Márcio Carocho is an Assistant Researcher at SUSTec–Associate Laboratory for Sustainability and Technology in Mountain Regions and CIMO–Mountain Research Centre, at the Bragança Polytechnic University (BPU), Portugal. He holds a PhD in Pharmacy from the Complutense University of Madrid (Spain), and a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Biotechnology from BPU. His research lies at the intersection of food science, chemistry of natural products, and sustainable bio-based technologies, with a particular focus on the development of innovative solutions for the agrifood sector. Since 2023, he is ranked among the world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in Food Science. He has authored over 100 scientific articles and 15 book chapters, having also edited a book on secondary metabolites of plants. He holds three patents and was a co-founder of Tree Flowers Solutions, a biotech start-up dedicated to the development of sustainable technologies for the agrifood sector.
