Niyaz Ahmed

Prof. Niyaz Ahmed is Senior Professor (HAG-15) at the University of Hyderabad’s Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, with adjunct appointments at AcSIR and as Editor-in-Chief of Gut Pathogens (Springer-Nature) since 2009. He previously served as Senior Director at icddr,b (UN D1/step 8) and chaired his department at UoH, in addition to holding courtesy roles in global institutions. Trained in veterinary science, biotechnology, and genomics with specialized courses in bioinformatics, biosafety, and pandemics, he has supervised 20 PhD students and taught courses on metagenomics, cell biology, IPR, and systems modeling. His honors include the 2019 Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Prize, fellowships from the American Academy of Microbiology, RSC, and NASI, and awards from Microsoft and Indian agencies. Focused on molecular infection epidemiology, his well-funded research investigates bacterial adaptation, drug resistance, and virulence, producing 185 papers in leading journals with over 10,000 citations and an H-index of 56.
