Yuan obtained her BA and MS in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Tokyo in Japan and her MPH and PhD in Epidemiology from the University of California Berkeley. She then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at Tsinghua University, China. Her research interests include microbiology, epidemiology, and bioinformatics. She joined Cell Systems as scientific editor in 2024.
