Haruo Kawamoto

Professor Haruo Kawamoto is a Professor in the Graduate School of Energy Science at Kyoto University, Japan. He received his PhD in Agriculture from Kyoto University in 1991 and conducted postdoctoral research at North Carolina State University. His research focuses on the efficient utilization of biomass for the production of biofuels, biochemicals, and biomaterials, with particular expertise in thermochemical conversion processes, including pyrolysis and gasification. A distinctive feature of his research is the elucidation of molecular mechanisms underlying biomass pyrolysis and the application of this fundamental understanding to the control and development of thermochemical conversion processes. His recent research explores efficient routes to bio-based chemicals through controlled pyrolysis, catalysis, and the utilization of nanoscale structures in plant cell walls. He is a Fellow of the International Academy of Wood Science and has received major awards from the Japan Wood Research Society and the Cellulose Society of Japan.
