Dr. R. Roger Ruan is a globally renowned scientist and Professor at the University of Minnesota, where he also serves as the Director of the Center for Biorefining. Elected to the National Academy of Engineering (Class of 2025) and a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (Class of 2023), his pioneering work focuses on advancing a sustainable circular economy through innovative waste utilization and renewable energy technologies. Dr. Ruan is celebrated for his groundbreaking research in catalytic microwave processing, microalgae cultivation, and non-thermal plasma. His work transforms solid and liquid wastes, including biomass, plastics, and wastewater, into valuable fuels, chemicals, and materials. With over 600 refereed publications, 21 U.S. patents, and more than 53,000 citations (h-index 114), he is ranked #1 globally in microwave pyrolysis and microalgae/wastewater treatment. A dedicated mentor, he has guided over 100 graduate students and 150 post-doctoral fellows. He has also secured over $45 million in research funding and delivered more than 400 invited lectures worldwide, solidifying his status as a leader in engineering and environmental science.
