Prof. Isabel Castanheira

She is a retired Principal Researcher at the National Institute of Health Doutor Ricardo Jorge (INSA), Portugal, where she headed the Food and Nutrition Department. She remains actively involved in national and international scientific activities, with extensive experience in food composition, nutrition, metrology, food safety, and analytical measurement.

Throughout her career, she has participated in numerous European and international research projects and collaborative studies, including studies supporting the certification of values assigned to certified reference materials (CRMs). Her research focuses on the characterization of foods, the determination of nutrients and emerging contaminants, and the comparability, reliability, and metrological traceability of measurement results to SI units, including the development and application of state-of-the-art analytical methods.

She has served as a member of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Nutrition and Childhood Obesity and as Chairperson of the IMEKO Technical Committee on Metrology in Food and Nutrition. She has also co-supervised PhD and Master's theses, particularly in the field of food characterization.

She has an extensive scientific publication record spanning metrology and food composition to food toxicology, with a substantial proportion of her work published in first-quartile (Q1) journals according to SCImago rankings. She is also an experienced reviewer for international indexed scientific journals.

Her editorial activities include serving as Editor of Food Chemistry (Elsevier) and as a member of the editorial boards of the Journal of Food Composition and Analysis (Elsevier), Measurement (Elsevier), and Foods (MDPI). She also serves as a Section Editor for the second edition of the Encyclopedia of Food, Nutrition and Health.
