Amane Koizumi received his MD and PhD from Keio University School of Medicine, specializing in electrophysiology and retinal visual physiology. After postdoctoral training with Prof. Richard Masland at Harvard Medical School, he returned to Japan and served as Associate Professor at the National Institute for Physiological Sciences (NIPS), later becoming Specially Appointed Professor at the National Institutes of Natural Sciences (NINS), where he led research management and university research capability analyses. He has also worked with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT) and the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST) in science policy, research evaluation, and science communication. Since 2023, he has been a Specially Appointed Professor at Tohoku University, promoting Open Access in Japan. In April 2025, he was appointed Vice President of the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST). He is a member of the International Advisory Board of the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings, and since September 2025, a board member of the 4th Generation University (4GU) initiative.
