University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School, USA

Joel D. Richter is a Professor of Molecular Medicine and the Arthur F. Koskinas Professor in Neuroscience at the University of Massachusetts Chan Medical School. Richter and his laboratory defined cytoplasmic polyadenylation and the RNA binding protein CPEB as being instrumental in translational control in early development and in the brain. More recently, they have demonstrated that Fragile X Syndrome, a neurodevelopmental disorder, is in part caused by mis-splicing of FMR1 RNA. This mis-splicing event is corrected by antisense oligonucleotide (ASO) administration, suggesting a possible novel therapeutic advance to treat this disease.
