The Pharmacological Potential of Cyanobacteria explores the bioactive compounds isolated from cyanobacteria in relation to human health and biotechnological applications. Cyanobacteria have proved to be a very attractive source of new secondary metabolites in a range of areas from cancer to antifouling, with different structures of those found in higher plants and is promising for the pharmaceutical industry.
This book presents an overview of the chemistry and ecology of cyanobacteria, focusing on their culture needs and techniques of biomass production. The book is organized according to the different biological activities and biotechnological applications of the compounds of interest discovered in the last years. Besides the biological activity, the mechanism of action of the compounds are explained, and its molecular structure will be displayed. Finally, the compounds already used in therapeutics and biotechnology, as well as those in phase of approval or clinical trials are explored. Each chapter is written by a different research group with expertise in the field and publications in peer reviewed journals. In addition to the chapters proposed herein, others can be included according to their importance to the field.
