Dr. Lya G. Soeteman-Hernandez is a Safe and Sustainable Innovation Approach (SSIA) Expert at the National Institute of Public Health and the Environment (RIVM) in the Netherlands. She has a PhD in anatomy and cell biology/molecular toxicology. She is an expert in applying SSIA for the development of safer and more sustainable chemicals, materials, production processes and products. She is one of the leading experts of SSIA which contains the concept of Regulatory Preparedness, Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) and Trusted Environment. She is co-chair of the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) SSIA Steering Group focusing on the operationalization of SSIA and SSbD. She is also co-chair of the Network for Safety and sustainability of Chemicals and materials (NSC) Working Group on SSbD, Innovation & Regulation; and leading the policy hub and the SSbD hub in the IRISS (international ecosystem for accelerating the transition to SSbD materials, products and processes) community platform.
