Argonne National Laboratory, USA
Dr. Tongchao Liu is a Chemist in the Chemical Sciences and Engineering Division at Argonne National Laboratory and a CASE Scientist Affiliate at the University of Chicago. He received his Ph.D. from Peking University in 2019. His research focuses on advanced battery cathode materials and the multiscale chemo-mechanical degradation mechanisms of electrochemical energy storage systems. Dr. Liu is internationally recognized for pioneering operando synchrotron-based characterization techniques that uncover the coupled roles of lattice strain and lattice rotation in cathode degradation. His work has established new design principles for high-energy, stable, and cost-effective battery materials, including dual-gradient and cobalt-free cathode architectures. He has published more than 160 papers in leading journals, including Nature, Science, Nature Energy, Nature Nanotechnology and Energy Storage Materials. His honors include the MIT Technology Review 35 Innovators Under 35 Award (Global List), R&D 100 Award, the ACS ENFL Emerging Investigator Award, and the Argonne Impact Award. He currently serves as an Editor for Materials Today Energy.
