3 April 2025

By Mary Jo Vetter, DNP, RN, AGPCNP-BC, FAANP

Q: What is unique about this book?

A: This book is unique in several ways. The first is that it is co-edited by two doctorally prepared nurses. One is a DNP from academia and the other is a PhD from practice who worked together in creating and fostering an academic practice partnership that was mutually beneficial for both settings. The vision of the book was to bring together experts from academia and practice to revise a 1st edition textbook by bringing together research and translational scientists to benefit both students and nurses in practice. Each of the chapters pair experts from both academia and practice and uses contemporary examples of evidence based quality improvement and research that can be analysed and implemented.

Q: How is this book different from books already addressing the same subject?

A: This undertaking demonstrates how academia and practice can collaborate to provide contemporary guidance on how evidence-based practice can directly impact healthcare outcomes by empowering students and practicing nurses who are developing and advancing their knowledge and skill sets.

Q: Who would primarily benefit from reading this book? Who else might be interested in the content?

A: Nursing students, both undergraduate and graduate students and faculty would benefit from this textbook as it helps to provide a broad review of the principles of evidence-based practice and translational science. Additionally, front-line nurses and nurse leaders would also benefit from the content as it integrates contemporary principles related to ANCC Magnet designation, the AACN Essentials of Professional Nursing Education, and the most recent Future of Nursing report and utilizes current research and evidence-based practice methodologies and examples that can be used every day.

Q: What are some of the best features of this book?

A: The best feature of the book is that the authors’ groups are well represented from both academia, practice, various doctoral degrees and other content expert from across the country.

Q: What are the top 3 things you would like readers to take away from the book?

A: Nurses are positioned perfectly to help utilize evidence-based practice to impact health care outcomes. Doctorally prepared nurses and other content experts working together can provide exemplary strategies to help impact health care outcomes well into the future. There are many opportunities for nurses in academia and practice to create a lasting impact on patients, staff and healthcare through true partnership and each has something to offer.
