2022 winners of the Mathematical Sciences Sponsorship Fund

We are proud to support the organizations below with our 2022 Mathematical Sciences Sponsorship Fund:

Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM)

The Mexican Mathematical Society (SMM) is a non-profit organization that was founded in 1942 with the following goals and purposes:

  • To stimulate, promote and support research in the mathematical sciences in Mexico and to seek the cooperation of academics and intellectuals interested in this research.

  • To publish scientific journals and encourage the development and publication of mathematics textbooks.

  • To engage in and organize activities such as conferences, workshops, seminars, mathematics competitions etc.

  • To contribute to the improvement of the teaching of mathematics in Mexico at all levels.

  • To promote the inclusion of underrepresented groups, particularly women, in all mathematical activities.

  • To stimulate interest in mathematical activity and encourage the recognition of its impact and importance on the development of culture, innovation, and scientific and technological competitiveness in Mexico.

  • To promote the exchange of all types of mathematical activities with those of other nations.

The SMM will use the Mathermatical Sciences Sponsorship grant to create the first national initiative to advance mathematical education with a gender perspective in Mexico.  It will support six students doing research in mathematical education from an intersectional perspective via two research, two graduate and two undergraduate grants. We hope that this will generate paths for the grantees to occupy leadership positions in Mexico in the future.

Operator Algebras Mentor Network (OAMN)

The Operator Algebras Mentor Network (OAMN) is a non-profit organization that was initially founded to provide early-career women operator algebraists with a trusted ally in the event of abuse or harassment. Its goals have since expanded to supporting and retaining early-career operator algebraists who are underrepresented or in minority within mathematics due to gender. The Network consists of three tiers: senior mentors (permanent faculty), junior mentors (postdoctoral fellows), and mentees (graduate students from underrepresented genders in mathematics). Mentoring takes place in small groups that include member(s) from each tier.

The Board of OAMN organizes workshops and meetups to forge connections among the members, increase the visibility of people of underrepresented genders, and improve the mentorship skills of members in our community.  Currently, the Network consists of 24 Mentees, 24 Junior Mentors, 21 Senior Mentors. The Network includes members with PhDs obtained between 1982 and 2026 (projected), located across 20 different countries spanning North America, Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Oceania.

Our mission is as follows:

  • Retain operator algebraists who are underrepresented or in minority within mathematics due to gender.

  • Provide early-career operator algebraists with a trusted ally in the event of abuse/harassment.

  • Provide a source of career advice for mentees outside of their home institutions and to support

  • their careers.

  • Provide nonjudgmental, confidential, solicited advice on work-life balance and career.

  • Provide a network for people supporting this mission.

  • Improve mentorship skills of operator algebraists.
