Faculty retention and career development processes are central to an institution's success. Interfolio can support you to anchor these processes in fairness and rigor - with clear documentation of faculty career paths, promotion prospects, workload allocations and personal accomplishments.
Retaining top talent for growth
A recent global survey of over 425academic leaders highlighted significant challenges with retaining staff, faculty management and funding in research and higher education.
While 62% of academic leaders ranked staff retention as a high priority, research productivity and increasing administrative duties were cited as top challenges (44% and 42%, respectively) by both leadership and faculty.
Therefore, although leaders are challenged by staffing levels and retention, top talent are facing increasing administrative burden and a lack of personal development, causing discontentment and churn.
"Quite often, a burden is experienced in meeting administrative requirements in reporting, curriculum updates or student advising, which has led to burnout and frustration amongst teachers."

Burdens on faculty prevent them from pursuing high-value activities
43% of senior leaders rated staff burnout among their top five current challenges, in part driven by the inadequate systems used for faculty evaluations - and the administrative burdens they exacerbate. Similarly, 41% of respondents (45% of senior leadership and 38% of senior faculty) ranked heavy workloads as an obstacle to timely promotion and salary increases, 47% of senior faculty also cited administrative commitments that distract from research, teaching and service as a top five reason for timely promotions and salary increases - while 34% of senior leadership agreed.
Data-driven systems for clarity - and a way forward
Technology systems form two of the top five areas of dissatisfaction, spotlighting the provision and management of technology as a cornerstone of academic leaders' priorities.
The visibility of relevant, real-time, equitable data gives leaders the clarity needed to track senior faculty, their careers and workloads. Accurate tracking leads to accurate and timely decisions, linking complex data sets that impact the fairness of review processes, promotions, compensation and equitable career management.
This highlights the need for better tools, improved data management and standardized processes.
"There were delays in the promotion process because faculty evaluation data was scattered across multiple systems. This made it difficult to get a complete picture of their performance leading to unnecessary delays in recognizing faculty who deserved advancement."
