Leonie Barner

Leonie Barner is Professor of Chemistry at the School of Chemistry and Physics, Queensland University of Technology (QUT). From 2020 to 2023, Leonie was the director of the Centre for a Waste-Free World at QUT – a transdisciplinary research centre that followed a holistic approach to develop technologies and processes to reduce waste, while using social science knowledge to catalyse change and reduce barriers to participation and adoption.
Besides her research interest in polymer chemistry and material science, she leads projects in the field of sustainability and circular economy. Leonie – as a research leader of the Reef Restoration and Adaptation Program - and her team developed bioadhesives for reef recovery and coral outplanting. In 2024, Leonie was awarded the RACI Chemical Service Award.
