University of Technology Sydney

Professor Bingyang Shi is a biomedical engineer whose work focuses on developing effective ways to deliver medicines to the brain. Treating brain diseases is extremely difficult because the brain is protected by a natural barrier that prevents most drugs from entering. Professor Shi’s research mission to overcome this challenge using advanced technologies that can safely transport therapies directly to brain tissue.

Professor Shi has published more than 100 scientific papers as senior authors in well-known journals including Nature Nanotechnology, Science Translational Medicine, Science Advances, Nature Communications, and his work has been cited more than 11,000 times worldwide. He has also invented several patented drug delivery technologies designed to carry gene therapies and other medicines across the blood–brain barrier, leading to IIT (phrase 0) clinical trials.
