Faculty Affairs Institutional Readiness: Academic leaders evaluate their progress

The Faculty Affairs Institutional Readiness survey report offers new insights to help enhance faculty success and drive institutional progress.

New insights for faculty affairs success

Engaged faculty are essential for institutional success. The Faculty Affairs Institutional Readiness (FAIR) model, developed through extensive research with the faculty affairs community, encompasses five key areas that empower institutional readiness: scope and policy, personnel, financial sustainability, technology and faculty development.

In partnership with Tyton Partners, we surveyed 270 academic leaders across the US to evaluate their progress against this model. This report reveals their findings and offers a path forward for leaders ready to invest in faculty affairs to support institutional success.

What you'll learn in this report

Scope and policy

Discover how to align faculty affairs goals with your institution's strategic mission and foster collaboration between faculty, administration, and other campus offices. The report shows that while 87% of leaders feel their policies are aligned, there are key differences in communication frequency based on institution size.

Personnel

Learn what it takes to adequately staff and support your faculty affairs office for long-term continuity. While 80% of institutions feel adequately staffed, the report highlights that Minority-Serving Institutions (MSIs) and smaller institutions face unique challenges.

Financial sustainability

Explore different approaches to budgeting and staffing. This is the area with the least consistency across institutions, presenting a significant opportunity for leaders to drive positive impact through strategic financial planning.

Technology

See how technology can empower your institution with crucial insights. Though reported as the greatest area for improvement (27%), technology offers the potential to measure progress, provide clarity, and guide strategic direction for faculty and student success.

Faculty development

Understand the value of investing in faculty throughout their careers. This is the area where leaders take greatest pride (48%), yet the report reveals that retention rates vary significantly, especially at smaller institutions, highlighting opportunities to better support faculty needs.

Key findings from the survey

Our survey of 270 academic leaders revealed vital insights for the faculty affairs field. Here are a few highlights:

  • Faculty development is the area where FA leaders have the most pride in their office's performance (48%)

  • Technology is seen as the greatest area for improvement (27%)

  • Suite users, who leverage a single solution provider, are more likely to offer professional development and plan budgets 4+ years in advance

  • Retention rates for tenure-track faculty decline as the institution's faculty FTE decreases, signalling a need for better support at smaller institutions
