Serenella Sala

Serenella Sala heads the Sustainable Supply Chains and Bioeconomy Unit at the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC), where she leads work on the sustainable use of natural resources, supply chain assessment, and the transition to a circular and bio-based economy. The Unit develops methods, models, and analytical tools to support EU policies in evaluating the sustainability of supply chains, including environmental and competitiveness aspects.
An environmental scientist by training, Serenella has dedicated her career to advancing sustainability assessment methodologies, with a particular focus on life cycle assessment (LCA) as a tool for informed decision-making. She is ranked among the top 2% scientists worldwide in the environmental sustainability domain, author of more than 120 scientific publications and serves as Senior Editor for leading journals, including Green Chemistry and Integrated Environmental Assessment and Management. She holds a PhD in Ecotoxicology and Applied Ecology.
