Mehran Kianinia

Mehran Kianinia

University of Technology Sydney, Australia

Dr Mehran Kianinia is a Chancellor’s Research Fellow at UTS focusing on the optical study of atomically thin materials, specifically hexagonal boron nitride (hBN). His research expertise spans quantum optics, nanophotonics and nanofabrication with a particular focus on optically active defects in hBN for sensing applications. The end goal of his research is to develop technologies based on 2D materials for application in quantum computation, quantum communication and quantum sensing.

He received his B.Sc (2007) and M.Sc (2010) in Materials and Science Engineering before completing his PhD in physics (2018) at UTS. He has received competitive research grants from ARC discovery project and the US Office of Naval Research to investigate quantum technologies with point defects in hBN and has been awarded the excellence in research from School of Mathematical and Physical Sciences in 2021. Besides his research, he actively mentors and supervises PhD and honours students and lectures several courses for undergraduate students.
