Profile
Bastian Ruehle
Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM), Germany
Bastian studied chemistry at the University of Heidelberg, got his PhD at the University of Munich, and joined UCLA as a postdoctoral fellow before coming to the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing, where he is now leading the Division 6.7 – Material Synthesis and Design. He is interested in the synthesis, characterization, and application of nano and advanced materials for various fields of application. In his work, he employs Self-Driving Labs, Materials Acceleration Platforms, and AI/ML for accelerating the discovery of new materials. In this context, he also works on hardware and software solutions for automated synthesis and characterization methods and workflows, (Meta)data management, knowledge graphs, and ontologies for SDLs and MAPs, as well as the development of open-source software for AI-based image analysis, LLM-driven workflow generation, and hardware integration and orchestration. Bastian co-coordinates the Advanced Materials Competence Center and the Materials Acceleration Platform Center at the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).
