ScienceDirect, the world's largest platform for peer-reviewed literature used daily by millions of researchers, introduces new generative AI tool to cut literature research time in half and improve research outcomes.
London, March 12, 2025 - Elsevier, a global leader in scientific information and analytics, today announced ScienceDirect AI, a cutting-edge generative AI tool for researchers. The tool aims to transform research by enabling researchers to quickly extract, summarize, and compare trusted insights from over 10 million full-text scholarly articles and book chapters on ScienceDirect, the world's largest platform of peer-reviewed literature. Researchers need to quickly extract reliable and accurate insights from the ever-growing volume of information. Research shows that researchers spend 25-35% of their time searching the literature. ScienceDirect AI addresses this challenge by instantly generating accurate summaries from the widest range of specialized content available -- over 10 million full-text peer-reviewed scholarly articles and book chapters -- making key insights easier to find. It also provides a complete bibliography to ensure research is reproducible and trustworthy. Key features include: Combining the broadest, most specialized, validated content with generative AI: ScienceDirect AI extracts insights from the world's largest corpus of peer-reviewed full-text academic articles and book chapters. Presenting traceable claims based on scientific evidence in context: Information traceability and reproducibility are essential to ensuring the credibility of research. To ensure reliable findings are reproducible, ScienceDirect AI provides links to sources and origins of claims, including relevant passages within research articles, allowing users to explore the information further. Responsible AI: ScienceDirect AI is built to ensure accuracy and reduce the risk of hallucination and bias. Users are made clear how the answers provided were obtained. Developed with researchers, designed for researchers: Over 30,000 researchers and librarians from 70 universities and R&D aggregators worldwide have been involved in the testing and development of ScienceDirect AI. By incorporating their feedback, the tool reduces literature research time by 50% and helps improve the quality of research. ScienceDirect AI includes the following features: "Ask ScienceDirect AI": Search and summarize full-text academic papers and book chapters Search and get answers from 14 million full-text academic papers and book chapters by entering your desired information and purpose in your own words. ScienceDirect AI searches over 10 million documents in the index and provides referenced summaries, excerpts from each reference, and short summaries of related findings, along with links to the original documents. "Reading Assistant": Chat with ScienceDirect documents This chat feature answers questions about the content of a specific full-text academic paper or book chapter and allows researchers to ask further questions about the content of that document. Click on a reference in the abstract to jump to the corresponding part of the article where the answer originates. It also suggests research questions. "Compare Experiments": Presents experimental summaries in a table. Comparing and synthesizing literature can be time-consuming. ScienceDirect AI's unique experiment comparison tool, Compare Experiments, takes a set of papers and categorizes and tabulates each experiment described within, extracting key elements such as their objectives, methods, and results. Judy Verses, President of Elsevier's University & Government division, said: "Feedback from users around the world shows that ScienceDirect AI has the potential to be a game-changing tool for researchers who struggle with information overload and want to quickly access reliable, accurate insights. ScienceDirect is a trusted platform for millions of researchers worldwide, and this new generative AI tool will seamlessly integrate into their current research activities, empowering researchers to spend more time on their research and achieve greater results. We will continue to collaborate with researchers to develop innovative solutions that support the advancement of science and humanity." Matías Montero, a PhD student in Education at the University of Oxford, who participated in the ScienceDirect AI test, said: "I've been thinking for a long time about how much time ScienceDirect AI has saved me. The main features I use are search, Reading Assistant, and the ability to upload and query my own PDFs. I estimate that all of this saves me about an hour of time each day in my research workflow, which is extremely valuable. It allows me to delve deeper into relevant and important papers, meaning I can spend more time writing rather than wasting time searching and extracting key points," said Professor Paulo Bothelho Piers of Porto Accounting and Business School, who participated in the ScienceDirect AI test. "ScienceDirect AI tools have transformed the way I work. In an ecosystem of AI tools that includes hallucinations and misinformation, this tool stands out for its accuracy. The high quality of the information I receive has saved me hours of searching. This tool has allowed me to broaden the scope of my research projects, investigate more diverse research questions, and produce better research outcomes."
