Description
New Advances in Cardiovascular Physiology and Pharmacology presents the proceedings of the IX Latin American Congress of Physiological
Sciences and the 2nd Scientific Meeting of the Latin American Society of Hypertension held September 1997 in Caracas, Venezuela. Contributors
were selected from among the world's most outstanding investigators in the field of cardiovascular physiology and pharmacology.
Original research and current state-of-the-art reviews are presented discussing hypertension, atherosclerosis, heart failure and drug
therapy.
In the area of hypertension, the presentations included topics on what can be learned from ambulatory blood pressure monitoring;
on pathogenic factors...the role of angiotensin II receptors, on dopamine receptors and serotonin receptors; on the role of salt and
hyperinsulinemia; on the effect of histamine receptors on norepinephrine; and on the use of histamine synthesis antagonists.
Of
equal importance are the discussions on the risk factors in cardiovascular disease and the possibility of preventing and/or reversing
human atherosclerosis. Is a mass drug treatment of hypertension or hypercholesterolemia the best option? What about quality assurance
and care of patients?
The volume also covers the modern drugs used in the therapy of hypertension and heart failure. Studies are
presenting reviewing drugs such as amlodipine and enalapril, or comparing the old major groups of antihypertensive drugs such as beta
blockers and calcium channel antagonists against newer, more highly publicized agents.
