Description
Progress in Hepatology 4 - Liver Cirrhosis Update includes the basic and clinical research on liver cirrhosis and its treatment as presented in the 4th Tadao Takahashi Memorial Forum held in Tokyo, Japan in 1997.

Liver cirrhosis is the final outcome of virtually all chronic liver diseases. The etiology differs markedly from country to country. For example, in Japan (and probably most countries of East and Southeast Asia) hepatitis B and C are the most common causes while in western countries it is alcohol. In this volume the focus is almost exclusively on those cases due to HBV and/or HCV. Articles are presented on molecular pathology; classification from a pathological perspective; imaging diagnosis; endoscopic treatment and progress in bioartificial liver support among others.

The mechanism of hepatocyte injury differs between virus- and alcohol-induced chronic liver diseases. These differences produce pathological, functional and clinical features of etiologically different liver cirrhosis. We hope that this volume helps readers to understand the present status of liver cirrhosis and its modern treatment in Japan.
