On June 1st, Reed Elsevier announced the intention to divest its defence
exhibition portfolio. This decision was a direct result of listening to
Elsevier’s stakeholders and taking their concerns seriously.
"Our defence shows are quality businesses which have performed well in
recent years,” said Sir Crispin Davis, Chief Executive Officer of Reed
Elsevier. “Nonetheless, it has become increasingly clear that growing numbers
of important customers and authors have very real concerns about our
involvement in the defence exhibitions business. We have listened closely to
these concerns and this has led us to conclude that the defence shows are no
longer compatible with Reed Elsevier's position as a leading publisher of
scientific, medical, legal and business content."
Throughout 2007, an Elsevier grant is enabling the MLA’s new Librarians
Without Borders program to sponsor Lenny Rhine, University of Florida
Librarian Emeritus, to stage onsite HINARI
workshops and a distance learning course.
“Lenny has been training as long as I’ve known him," explained Tony McSean,
Elsevier’s Director of Library Relations. "He knows everybody and knows where
the need is. That's why we thought we’d team up with the Medical Library
Association and give them the money to coordinate the training activities that
Lenny does.”
A study published in the Journal
of Aging Studiesby American researchers at Brigham
Young University, Utah, looked at 93 characters that appeared to be aged 55 or
older from 34 Disney films. The researchers claim that there is a potential
risk that Disney characters - such as Grumpy, Dopey, the Wicked Queen and
Cruella de Vil – may cause children to associate elderly people with evil and
incompetent behavior.
"Disney films may not be the primary source of children's negative
perceptions of older people. However, there is evidence that the media do
influence children's perceptions."
