Areas of Expertise: Partnering with libraries, information
philanthropy, issues facing medical librarians, pricing and digital
preservation
Tony has a long-standing interest and involvement in the development issues
facing libraries around the world. He has written and spoken extensively about
the changes occurring in scholarly communication, digital preservation and the
issues that unite and divide librarians and publishers. Tony’s dedication to
bridging the “information divide” is evident through his leadership in the HINARI
and AGORA programs,
that provide free or low cost access to Elsevier journals in over 100
developing countries.
Through his professional work Tony is actively concerned with the nature and
future of professional associations in the digital age. He was the instigator
of the process that re-created the European Health Library Association (
EAHIL),
the first international virtual Library and Information Services (LIS)
professional body.
Before joining Elsevier in 2004, Tony spent 30 years as a librarian working in
national and research libraries including 16 years as Director of the British
Medical Association Library, the UK's leading medical library and
information service. He is active in LIS professional matters and is currently
the elected chair of the
CILIP
Council (the national UK professional body), immediate past president of
EAHIL, and chair of the US Medical Library Association's
international
section.
