Areas of Expertise: impact factors; the role of published papers in the
research assessment exercise; journal pricing
Mayur has conducted many studies on the scientific publishing system, and on
evidence-based techniques for measuring both its impact and understanding the
role of publishing on research and teaching. His work also seeks to understand
how scientific publishing can better meet the differing expectations of
researchers, authors and academics - issues on which he has published
articles in specialist journals and delivered conference presentations.
His deep knowledge of the scholarly publishing industry, acquired during 25
years, have made him an authoritative commentator on this dynamic and
fast-changing sector, and a regular contributor to industry debates and
policy-formation exercises. By training a scientist (with a degree in
Biochemistry and Toxicology), Mayur conducted research in the energy industry
(Shell) before moving into scientific publishing, first with Pergamon then
with Elsevier.
