Alicia Wise

Alicia holds a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of North Carolina - Chapel Hill, and worked as an academic archaeologist.  Next she joined the UK Joint Information Systems Committee to manage national negotiations for access to a broad array of intellectual property and then to direct innovation programs to stimulate the creative use of information technology in universities and colleges.  Alicia then moved to the publishing industry as Chief Executive of the Publishers Licensing Society which is a not-for-profit owned by publishing trade bodies to oversee collective licensing arrangements for UK publishers.  From that position she was also seconded to serve as Head of Digital Publishing at The Publishers Association (PA).

She joined Elsevier in June 2010 to lead the Universal Access team.  In this role she is responsible for our access strategy and policies, for launching/monitoring access pilot projects, and for building relationships with other stakeholders in the scholarly communication landscape who share our interest in broadening access.  The universal access team works closely with colleagues throughout Elsevier and is a catalyst for information exchange and innovation.

Alicia is very passionate about expanding access to information, and particularly enjoys developing successful partnerships across complex stakeholder communities.  Her areas of expertise lie at the intersection of copyright and digital technology.
