CrossRef Linking

As a founding member of External link  CrossRef, Elsevier supports industry-wide cross-platform linking solutions. ScienceDirect offers free linking to over to over 245 publishers from article references and bibliographic databases on the platform. We register all our article metadata using the External link  DOI (Digital Object Identifier) standard, which means our links are persistent and won’t change or break.

GenBank Linking

External link  GenBank is the NIH (US National Institutes of Health) genetic sequence database, a collection of all publicly available DNA sequences. Many articles in ScienceDirect contain these sequences and are linkable to descriptions of those particular sequences in GenBank.

OpenURL Linking

Elsevier, a member of the NISO Committee AX, actively supports the External link  OpenURL industry standard for sending metadata using a specific syntax. Using link resolvers, the OpenURL standard enables librarians to set up links from abstracts and references on platforms such as ScienceDirect to corresponding content and services from other resources.
