PSYCHONEUROENDOCRINOLOGY

An International Journal
The Official Journal of the International Society of Psychoneuroendocrinology

Peer Review Policy for Psychoneuroendocrinology

Together with Ned Kalin and Robert Dantzer, our referees play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of Psychoneuroendocrinology and all manuscripts are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below.

Special issues and/or supplements may have different peer review procedures involving, for example, Guest Editors, the conference organisers or a conference's scientific committee. Authors contributing to such projects may receive full details of the peer review process on request from the editorial office.

Initial manuscript evaluation
The Editor first evaluates all manuscripts. Occasionally, manuscripts are rejected at this stage for being insufficiently original, having serious scientific flaws, having poor grammar or English language, or are outside the aims and scope of the journal. Those that meet the minimum criteria are passed on to at least 2 experts for review.

Type of Peer Review
This journal employs single blind review, where the referee remains anonymous throughout the process.

Manuscripts for which a review is requested are privileged communications and are the private property of the authors. Reviewers must, therefore, respect authors' rights by not publicly discussing the work or appropriating their ideas before the manuscript is published. Reviewers are prohibited from making copies of the manuscript and must not share it with others, except with the permission of the editor (for example, if recommending a colleague within their team to conduct the review).

How the referee is selected
Referees are matched to the paper according to their expertise. Our database is constantly being updated and we welcome suggestions for referees from the author though these recommendations may or may not be used.

Where possible we select referees known to us to have no potential conflict of interest with the content of the manuscript or the authors, but we also ask reviewers to confirm that they do not have a potential conflict of interest before they accept the review.

Referee reports
Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript:
- is original
- has sound methodology
- follows appropriate ethical guidelines
- has results which are clearly presented and that support the conclusions
- correctly references previous relevant work

Language correction is not part of the peer review process.

Where language correction would improve the prospects of a manuscript during peer review, we generally recommend to authors that they have the manuscript language edited by one of Elsevier's recommended suppliers: International Science Editing, Asia Science Editing and SPI Publisher Services (see External link http://authors.elsevier.com/LanguageEditing.html).

How long does the review process take?
Typically the manuscript will be reviewed within six weeks. Should the referees' reports contradict one another or a report is unnecessarily delayed a further expert opinion will be sought.

When revision of a manuscript is required, then revised manuscripts must be returned to the Editorial Office using the journal's online submission system within twelve weeks - otherwise the journal retains the right to consider the manuscript a new submission. Revised manuscripts are then usually returned to the initial referees within a week of receipt for a response within a further three weeks. Referees may request more than one revision of a manuscript. On occasion and at the discretion of the editors, revised manuscripts are not resubmitted to the original reviewers.

Final report
A final decision to accept or reject the manuscript will be sent to the author along with any recommendations made by the referees, and this may include edited or verbatim comments by the referees.

Editor's Decision is final
Referees advise the editor, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject the article.
