Meet the Political Geography Editors




Editor-in-Chief, John O'Loughlin, is Professor of Geography and Faculty Research Associate in the Institute of Behavioral Science at the University of Colorado at Boulder. He received his BA (Hons) degree from the National University of Ireland in 1969, his MS in 1971, and his Ph.D. in Geography from the Pennsylvania State University in 1973. His research interests are in the political geography of the post-Soviet Union, including Russian and Ukrainian geopolitics and ethno-territorialial nationalisms. He has also published on the diffusion of democracy, electoral geography, the geography of conflict, and the political geography of Nazi Germany. He has been an editor of Political Geography since the journal's start in 1981.

James D Sidaway studied geography and development studies as an undergraduate in Bulmershe College, Reading (England) before taking a Masters degree in internatinoal relations at the Graduate School of European and International Studies at the University of Reading and a PhD in Geography at Royal Holloway (University of London). He has taught geography at four English universities and at the National University of Singapore (2001-2005). His research was initially mostly based in southern Africa, but he has since worked on cross-border relations in Iberia (especially Portugal) and in Southeast Asia.

Pauliina Raento is Professor of Human Geography (Political Geography) at the University of Helsinki, Finland. Her work in political geography focuses on identity, boundaries, nationalism, and iconography. Her other interests include cultural geography, leisure, and visual methodologies. She has a broad background in academic publishing and editing, in two languages.
