ROBERT C. MOELLERING, JR., M.D.

Dr. Robert Moellering is the Shields Warren-Mallinckrodt Professor of Medical Research at Harvard Medical School. He served as Physician-in-Chief at the New England Deaconess Hospital from 1981 until 1996. He subsequently served as the Herrman L. Blumgart Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and Physician-in-Chief and Chairman of the Department of Medicine at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center (BIDMC) in Boston through 2005. During that period he was also President and CEO of Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians at BIDMC. Trained as an infectious diseases specialist, Dr. Moellering has been actively involved in laboratory research for the past 35 years carrying out numerous studies of the mechanism of action and mechanisms of resistance to antimicrobial agents and his work is reported in over 400 publications in scientific journals. He is a Fellow of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, Master of the American College of Physicians, an Honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, and has been elected to membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation and the Association of American Physicians. He is Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, Consulting Editor of Infectious Disease Clinics of North America, and Associate Editor of the Journal of Infection and Public Health. Dr. Moellering has received many prestigious awards, including an honorary Doctor of Science degree from Valparaiso University, the Garrod Medal from the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the Feldman Award and the Maxwell Finland Award from the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the Hoechst-Roussel Award from the American Academy for Microbiology, and in 2006 the Maxwell Finland Award for Scientific Achievement from the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Most recently, he is the 2008 recipient of the Alexander Fleming Award for Lifetime Achievement from the Infectious Diseases Society of America.
