Douglas Detterman's main research interest is in the study of human intelligence and mental
retardation. He received his undergraduate
education at Boston University (1964-1967) and then
became a research assistant to Norman Ellis. He received his master's (1969) and
doctoral (1970)
degrees from the University of Alabama. After graduate school, he taught for two years at the
University of Dayton.
He then completed a one-year postdoctoral with Benton J. Underwood at the
Northwestern University. Following the postdoctoral, Detterman
accepted a job in the Psychology Department at Case Western
Reserve University. He has remained at that position since 1973 and is currently
Professor of
Psychology. He served as chair of the Department from 1982 to 1985. The only time spent away from
the Department in the
last 20 years was one year as a Visiting Scientist at the Air Force Human
Resources Laboratory, San Antonio, Texas. Besides publishing
in the area of human intelligence and cognition, Professor Detterman is the Editor and founder of Intelligence. Intelligence
is a highly cited specialty journal publishing original research on human intelligence. He also served as President of Division 33 (Mental
Retardation) of the American Psychological Association (1984). He was director of the Gatlinburg Conference on Mental Retardation from
1981 to 1986. He was editor of the MR Newsletter of Division 33 (1980). He has served on numerous private and governmental review and
advisory committees.
