Editors Biography

P. N. James, School of Engineering, University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth, England, PL4 8AA, UKProfessor M Neil James is Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Dean of the Faculty of Technology at the University of Plymouth. He holds honorary Professorships at 4 other Universities in the UK, China, Italy and South Africa. He was a Beit Fellow during his postgraduate study, and has a DSc(Eng) for his contributions to fatigue research.

His research activities focus on fatigue design and crack growth, residual stresses, life prediction for welds, and crack growth phenomena, such as shielding, thresholds, variable amplitude loading and small crack effects. He has been author or co-author of more than 100 research publications in refereed International Journals and Conference Proceedings and has edited several conference proceedings.

He has received several awards related to these publications, including the Silver Medal of the South African Institution of Mechanical Engineering (1985) and their Ingham award for the best short technical paper (1988, 1989, 1995) and the Campbell-Pitt award (2003).

P. D. McDowell, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, Georgia Institute of Technology, 801 Ferst Dr., N.W., Atlanta, GA 30332-0405, USADavid L. McDowell is Regents' Professor and Carter N. Paden, Jr. Distinguished Chair in Metals Processing in the Schools of Materials Science and Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, and serves as Director of the Mechanical Properties Research Laboratory at the Georgia Institute of Technology.

Author of over 180 journal articles, Dr. McDowell's research focuses on the synthesis of experiment and computation to develop physically-based constitutive models for nonlinear and time-dependent behavior of materials, with emphasis on wrought and cast metals. Specialty areas include fatigue and fracture.

Dr. McDowell's honors include the ASTM Annual Fatigue Lecturer (2002) and the ASME Materials Division Senior Orr Award (best paper in fatigue and fracture) (2006). He has received the ASME Nadai Award (1997) and the Khan International Medal (2008) for career achievements.
