K. Bhattacharya, Journal of Mechanics & Physics, California Institute of Technology, MS 104-44, Pasadena, CA 91125, USA, Fax: +1-626-583-4963
Kaushik Bhattacharya is a Professor of Mechanics and Materials Science at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), and has been on the faculty there since 1993. He received his B.Tech degree in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras, India in 1986, his Ph.D in Mechanics from the University of Minnesota in 1991 and his post-doctoral training at the Courant Institute for Mathematical Sciences during 1991-1993. He has held visiting positions at Cornell University, Heriot-Watt University (Scotland), Max-Planck-Institute (Leipzig, Germany), Cambridge University (England), Indian Institute of Science (Bangalore, India) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory. His research interests lie at the intersection of Mechanics, Materials Science and Mathematics. He has as authored over 75 peer-reviewed scientific articles and a research monograph on shape-memory materials. He has given invited and plenary lectures at various professional organizations and universities in the United States, Europe and Asia. He received the Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1994, Charles Lee Powell Award in 1997, the Young Investigator Prize from the Society of Engineering Science (SES) in 2004, the Special Achievements Award in Applied Mechanics from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2004, and the Best Paper Award in the area of Active Materials from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers in 2005. He has supervised 10 doctoral students and mentored 8 postdoctoral scholars, 11 of whom hold currently faculty positions at universities around the world.

H. Gao, Division of Engineering, Brown University, Box D 182 Hope Street, Providence, RI 02912, USA
Huajian Gao received his B.S. degree from Xian Jiaotong University of China in 1982, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Engineering Science from Harvard University in 1984 and 1988, respectively. He served on the faculty of Stanford University between 1988 and 2002, where he was promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in 1994 and to full Professor in 2000. He served as a Director at the Max Planck Institute for Metals Research between 2001 and 2006. He joined the Faculty of Brown University in 2006. At present, he is the Walter H. Annenberg University Professor at Brown. Professor Gao has a background in engineering science and applied mechanics. His current research interests are focused on nanomechanics of biological systems as well as stress and diffusion processes in thin films and nanocrystalline materials. In the past, he has also worked on size-dependent plastic deformation at micron and submicron length scales and dynamic fracture in brittle solids. He has nearly 20 years of research experience with nearly 200 publications. He has broad collaborations with scientists in the United States, Europe and China.

Professor Gao is a receipient of numerous academic awards including the ASME Best Achievement Award for Young Investigators in Applied Mechanics, the SES Young Investigator Award, the Humboldt Research Fellowship Award, the NSF Young Investigator Award, the Guggenheim Memorial Fellowship Award, the IBM Faculty Development Award, and the Alcoa Science Award. He is a fellow of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and fellow of the Institute of Physics (UK).
