SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Submission of an article to the
The European Journal of Radiology Extra is understood to imply that the data therein have neither previously been published
(except in abstract form) nor are being considered for publication elsewhere. Manuscripts with multiple authors are reviewed on the assumption
that all listed authors concur with the submission and have approved the final manuscript. The manuscript is sent to two Reviewers, who
are responsible for further evaluation and peer review.
Papers for consideration should be submitted to:
Prof. Dr. Herwig Imhof,
Waehringer Guertel 18-20,
A-1090 Vienna/Austria.
Tel.: +43-1-404005803
Fax: +43-1-404003777
E-mail: osteo-mr@meduniwien.ac.at
Please note that e-mail submissions are encouraged.
PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS
Manuscripts should be written in English.
Authors whose native language is not English are strongly advised to have their manuscripts checked by an English-speaking colleague
who understands the material. Submit the original and two additional copies of the manuscript and enclose a PC-readable diskette or CD-ROM.
Electronic manuscript
Elsevier now publishes all manuscripts using electronic production methods and therefore needs to
receive the electronic files of your article along with the hardcopy of the accepted version. This means that fewer changes have to be
made, which reduces the possibility of errors being introduced. We can accept most word-processing formats (ideally Microsoft Word).
To ensure fast and easy processing of your submission, please adhere to the following guidelines:
- Save text and graphics on separate
disks
- to Label all disks with your name, a short version of the article title, word processing package used, the journal to be
published in, and the filenames.
- Ensure that the files on the disk match the hardcopy exactly. In cases of a discrepancy, the hardcopy
version will be used as the definitive version by the production team.
Layout of manuscript
Most formatting codes are
removed or replaced when we process your article so there is no need for you to use excessive layout styling. Please do not use options
such as automatic word breaking, justified layout, double columns or automatic paragraph numbering. Do use bold face, italic, subscripts,
superscripts, etc., as appropriate. Manuscripts should be typed on one side of the paper, with wide margins and double-spaced throughout.
Every page of the manuscript including the title page should be numbered. When you create your manuscript, please make sure it is in
the following order:
1. Title
2. Authors
3. Affiliation
4. Abstract
5. Keywords
6. Main text
7. Acknowledgement
8. Appendix
9. References
10. Figure legends*
11. Tables
*Note: Do not import figure files into the text file.
Manuscript
content
(i) Title page. The title should be clear, informative and not too long. The page should bear the name(s) of the author(s),
the complete postal address(es) of each author's affiliation, present address(es) if applicable, the full telephone and fax numbers and
e-mail address of the corresponding author and the complete correspondence address to which editorial queries and proofs should be sent.
(ii) Second page. The second page should only bear the title (without information about the authors for blind peer review).
(iii)
Abstract. The abstract should concisely describe the content of the article. It should be minimally one page, but should not be more
than one and a half typewritten pages.
Abbreviations and references must be avoided in the abstract.
(iv) Keywords: Between 3
and 6 keywords should be taken from the Radiology Index and listed at the end of the abstract.
(v) Article body: The main body of
the article should be ordered under the following headings: Introduction (or Objective); Materials and Methods (or Patients); Results;
Discussion; and Conclusion.
(vi) References: Reference lists must be limited to a maximum of 20-25 relevant citations per article.
They should be numbered consecutively as they appear in the text. All references must be cited in the text. They should be listed double
spaced on separate sheets under the heading 'References'. Abbreviations for titles of medical journals should conform to those used in the latest edition of Index Medicus. Unpublished results and personal communications should not be included in the reference list, but
should be cited in the text only (e.g. Smith et al., unpublished results). In the reference list, provide surname and initial of all
authors. For references with more than six authors insert 'et al.' after the third name. European references should be stressed. Style
and punctuation are shown in the following examples:

Tables
Tables are numbered in arabic numerals in order of appearance in text. If no grid is being used, use tabs to align
columns instead of spaces. Tables should be typed double spaced on separate sheets each and contain horizontal lines only. Each table
should have a brief and self-explanatory title. Standard abbreviations of units of measurements should be added between parentheses.
Illustrations
General instructions
Artwork must be numbered according to its sequence in the text. Figures, schemes
and plates must have captions. These captions must be provided on a separate sheet with the manuscript and each must be referred to in
text.
Artwork must be designed to fit either a single column (84 mm wide) or the full text width (175 mm). Similar images should
be of consistent size. Images should be tightly cropped. Lettering used in the artwork must be consistent in size (7-10 pt) and font
(use Arial, Courier, Helvetica, Times or Symbol).
Electronic submission of illustrations
The European Journal of Radiology
Extra requires all artwork to be submitted as electronic files. The best quality figures supplied will be considered for use on
the cover of the printed issue. For detailed specifications on submitting electronic illustrations, please see below and
http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork
Instructions for electronic submission of artwork
- Files must be in the correct format: preferably
TIFF, EPS or MS Office. JPEG files will also be accepted.
- Images should be captured at the following minimum resolutions:
-
Halftones and colour (all colour must be RGB): 300 dpi;
- Combination halftones: 500 dpi;
- Line art: 1000-1200 dpi.
- Annotations
to the figure, such as arrows and labels should be embedded in the electronic file.
- File names should be self-explanatory with
file extension included, e.g. use filename ''fig1.tif'' for Figure 1 in TIFF format.
- All illustrations to be provided as separate
files.
- The artwork may be submitted by e-mail attachment or on a 3.5-in. floppy disk, CD-ROM or ZIP disk.
If electronic figures
are unavailable, figures should be submitted in three sets of glossy black and white photographs. All hard copy illustrations (line drawings
and photographs) should be submitted separately, unmounted and not folded. Magnification should be indicated by a line representing the
actual scale of reproduction (e.g. 0.1 mm); the use of magnification factors is to be avoided where possible. Line figures should be
suitable for direct reproduction. They should be prepared with black ink on white paper, or be black and white prints: they should be
completely and consistently lettered, the size of the lettering being appropriate to that of the illustration. Each illustration should
be clearly marked on the reverse side with the shortened article title, the number of the illustration and its orientation (top); use
a soft pencil or preferably a felt-tipped pen for marking photographs.
PROOFS Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author
to be checked for typesetting accuracy. No changes or additions to the accepted manuscript will be allowed at this stage.
