Manuscripts for publication, letters, and all other editorial
communications should be addressed to the Editor-in-Chief, James B. Field, MD, Eight Windmill Point Lane, Hampton, VA 23664-2129; telephone/fax:
757-850-2826. Articles are accepted for publication on the condition that they are contributed solely to Metabolism. Contributors
should bear in mind the nature of the Journal, ie, articles should have a definite metabolic application, with case reports submitted
only if they include controlled observations of an exceptionally revealing nature. Papers should be as brief as possible and consistent
with the subject. Authors submitting a manuscript do so on the understanding that if it is accepted for publication, copyright in the
article, including the right to reproduce the article in all forms and media, shall be assigned exclusively to the Publisher.
Preliminary reports
Contributors are encouraged to submit articles in a special short form known as a "Preliminary Report,"
with the understanding that if such an article is accepted it will be printed in the next available issue. It can serve as a preliminary
report on work just completed, or may be a final report or an observation that does not require a lengthy write-up. To qualify for the
priority given a Preliminary Report, the article must not exceed 1,000 words including the bibliography, but exclusive of any illustrative
material. A simple table or small figure is allowed, but the author should cut the 1,000-word allowance by an amount sufficient to allow
for the space taken up by the table or illustration. Despite the limitation on length, data to support the conclusions stated should
be included to the extent necessary.
Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted on a disk, preferably in Microsoft
Word. Three double-spaced hard copy versions of the final manuscript, free of handwritten alterations, must accompany the disk. All components
of the manuscript must appear within a single electronic file: references, figure legends, and tables must appear at the end of the manuscript.
Please refrain from using end notes as references or automatic list numbering because these features are lost in conversion: simply type
the reference number in parentheses in the text and type the reference list. Formatting, such as Greek letters, italics, super- and subscripts,
may be used: the coding scheme for such elements must be consistent throughout.
The title page of the manuscript should
include (1) the name of the institution where the work was done ("From the Fels Research Institute . . ."); (2) acknowledgments for research
support the authors wish to publish; and (3) one complete mailing address for one author for the mailing of proofs and for reprint requests.
Previously published material
Authors are responsible for applying for permission for both print and electronic
rights for all borrowed materials and are responsible for paying any fees related to the applications of these permissions.
Illustrations and tables
All tables and figures must be cited in order in the text using arabic numerals. Illustrations should
carry their numbers and the author's name on the back; where necessary, indicate "top" on the back. Figure legends should be compiled
in a separate list at the end of the paper. To ensure clear reproduction, diagrams, charts, and other line drawings should be submitted
as glossy, black-and-white photo prints; for half-tone work, good photographic prints should be supplied. Photocopies are not acceptable
for reproduction in the Journal, but legible copies may be sent with the duplicate manuscripts. Tables and illustrations should be of
a size easily handled, and for all illustrations the effect of reduction in size to fit the Journal page should be considered. The contributor
must bear the full cost of printing color plates.
Electronic illustration submission
Figures may be submitted
in electronic format. Images should be provided in EPS or TIF format on Zip disk, CD, floppy, Jaz, or 3.5 MO. Graphics software such
as Photoshop and Illustrator, not presentation software such as PowerPoint, CorelDraw, or Harvard Graphics, should be used to create
the art. Color images must be CMYK, at least 300 DPI, with a digital color proof, not a color laser print or color photocopy (this proof
will be used at press for color reproduction). Gray scale images should be at least 300 DPI and accompanied by a proof. Combinations
of gray scale and line art should be at least 1200 DPI and accompanied by a proof. Line art (black and white or color) should be at least
1200 DPI and accompanied by a proof. Please include hardware and software information, in addition to the file names. For detailed instructions
on the preparation of electronic artwork. Please consult www.elsevier.com/authors.
References should be compiled numerically according to the order of citation in the text and typed double-spaced in the
Vancouver style, giving inclusive pages:

Contributors are provided with galley proofs and are
asked to proofread them for typesetting errors, returning them within 48 hours. Important changes in data are allowed within reason without
cost, but excessive alterations and additions must be charged to the contributor.
Reprints of articles will be furnished
to contributors when ordered in advance of publication. An order form is sent with proofs via Email upon registration of an article with
the publisher. Individual reprints of an article can usually be obtained by contacting its author (see footnote on first page of article).
