MANUSCRIPT PREPARATION
To submit a manuscript, please follow
the instructions
below.
Submit 1 typed, double-spaced
manuscript with 1-inch margins.
Also submit a CD with a label identifying
the computer
system and
word processing program used. CD
format is preferred.
Manuscripts should not exceed 10 to
12 pages (excluding
references, legends,
and tables). All pages must be
numbered. The text must conform
to acceptable English usage.
Use
generic drug names (trade
names may be listed in parentheses
at point of first mention).
Use a generic term to describe a
product,
then provide the product
trade name, manufacturer, city, and
state/country in parentheses following
the generic term.
Authors must use current dental nomenclature.
Consult the 8th edition
of The Glossary of Prosthodontic
Terms for accepted terminology.
This can be downloaded free
of charge on the Elsevier Web site:
www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ympr/home.
Identify teeth by name (e.g., maxillary
right central incisor) rather than
by number.
The primary
author must justify the
number of authors if the list exceeds
four.
Title page:
No abbreviations
should be used in the title. The title should be as concise as possible and yet define the study's scope, content, and clinical significance.
Include each author's full name, title, academic degrees(s), institutional affiliation(s), and location(s).
If the
manuscript was presented before an organized group, specify the name of the organization, the location, and inclusive dates of the event
at which the manuscript was presented.
List any grant or other financial support by citing the name of the supporting
organization and/or the grant number.
List the mailing address, business and home telephone numbers, fax number, and e-mail
address of the author who will receive correspondence.
Abstract:
A structured abstract is required
for all research articles. It should include the following sections: (1) statement of the problem, (2) purpose of study, (3) material
and methods, (4) results, (5) conclusion, and (6) clinical implications. The abstract should be limited to 250 words and typed double-spaced
on a separate page. It should contain no abbreviations.
Tip articles do not require abstracts.
The abstract of a clinical
report or
a dental technique article should
summarize the article and the procedure's
advantages in one brief
paragraph.
Text - types of articles:
Articles in the Journal can be classified
as follows: clinical reports,
research
studies, technical procedures,
systematic reviews, articles
on other professional subjects, and
tips. All submissions are evaluated
by
peer review.
All research manuscripts must include
a brief statement of the clinical
significance of the material presented.
The clinical report (1) describes the
author's methods for meeting a patient
treatment challenge, (2) makes
appropriate
reference to other treatment
methods considered and provides
a rationale for the selection
of the chosen method, and (3) includes
a brief
summary. It should
be no longer than 4-5 pages and accompanied
by no more than 8 quality
descriptive illustrations. Please
note: The
Editor may approve the
publication of additional figures if
they significantly contribute to the
value of the article.
The
research report (1) clearly
states the problem and objective
of the research in the form of a research hypothesis, (2) summarizes
relevant literature in the introduction,
(3) identifies the limitations of
the study, (4) describes the research
method so that it can
be duplicated
and judged for validity, (5) reports
the results accurately and briefly, (6)
provides a discussion of the findings,
and
(7) lists the conclusions that
may be drawn from the research.
The technical procedure (1) states
the objective of the
technique, (2)
describes the procedure, (3) makes
appropriate reference to alternate
techniques, (4) discusses the advantages
and disadvantages
of the technique
presented, and (5) is written
in a step-by-step "cookbook" manner. The technique section must be
in command form.
The systematic review accurately records
the sequence of development
of a particular phase of dentistry,
and provides
documentation by references.
The Journal is transitioning
away from literature reviews to systematic
reviews. The systematic review
should
be developed in the Cochrane
style and format. For more
information on systematic reviews,
please see www.cochrane.org.
An
example of a systematic review in
the Journal is
Fitzpatrick B. Standard of care for
the edentulous mandible: a systematic
review.
J Prosthet Dent 2006
Jan;95(1):71-8.
Briefly, the systematic review consists
of the following: An abstract - using a structured
format. The text of the review - consisting
of an introduction (background and
objective), methods (selection criteria,
search
methods, data collection,
and data analysis), results (description
of studies, methodological
quality, and results of analyses),
discussion,
authors' conclusions,
acknowledgments, and conflicts of
interest.
Tables and figures, if necessary showing
characteristics
of the included
studies, specification of the
interventions that were compared,
the results of the included studies,
a log of the studies
that were excluded,
and additional tables and
figures relevant to the review.
Tips from our readers are reports
of
helpful or timesaving procedures.
They should be limited to 2 authors,
no longer than 250 words, and accompanied
by no more than 2 illustrations.
The procedure section
must be in command form.
References:
References must be identified
in the
text by superscript Arabic numbers
and numbered in the order that
they are cited in the text.
All references,
except those requiring
discussion of new evidence-based
information resulting from the study
at hand, should be cited in the introduction
and/or material and methods
section(s).
Manuscripts in preparation, personal
communications, and other
unpublished information
are NOT
cited in the reference list. A personal
communication may be cited within
the text in parentheses, and should
include the name
of the person contacted,
his/her highest academic
degree, whether the communication
was oral or written, and the date of
the communication.
Abstracts are considered unpublished
observations and are not allowed
as references.
Reference to foreign
language publications
should be kept to a minimum
(no more than 3). They are
permitted only when the original
text has been translated
into English.
The English translation should
be used and the original language
noted in brackets.
The reference list should
appear at
the end of the article and be in numeric
sequence. Only references cited
in the text should appear in the
list. The format
should conform to
that set forth in "Uniform Requirements
for Manuscripts Submitted
to the Biomedical Journals" (www.icmje.org).
Journal titles should
conform to the abbreviations in the
Cumulative Index Medicus.
List up to six authors. If there are seven
or more authors, add et al after
the sixth author's name.

for edentulous patients. 12th ed. St.
Louis: Mosby; 2004. p. 312-23.
Tables:
Tables be double spaced and include column heads, footnotes, and data. Any abbreviation used in a table should be explained
in a footnote.
Tables should be numbered, using
Roman numerals, according to their
order of mention in the text. Each
table
must be submitted on a separate
page. Omit border/dividing
lines and shading.
Each table should have a concise title that describes
its content. Tables should be self-explanatory and supplement, NOT duplicate, the text or accompanying illustrations.
The tables should be submitted in
Microsoft Word, WordPerfect, or
RTF format. Microsoft Word is preferred.
If a table has been prepared
in Excel, it should be inserted into
one of the above-mentioned formats
prior to submission.
If a table or any data therein
have been published previously, a footnote must give full credit to the original source (see Permissions).
Preparation
of electronic images
Submitting your illustrations in electronic
format allows more accurate
and higher quality reproduction of
your work. The following guidelines
must be carefully followed.
Tips for making high quality
images:
Use lowest (25
or 50) ISO setting.
Avoid using Auto ISO.
Use largest resolution possible
(3072 x 2304).
Use least amount of JPEG
compression.
File type
Electronic files should be submitted
as TIFF files.
Figures should
not be submitted as Microsoft Word, Corel Draw, Harvard
Graphics, PowerPoint, or other
presentation software format.
The figures
should be submitted to
the Journal on a CD-Rom.
File dimensions and size
The figure dimensions must
be a
minimum of 4 x 6 inches. Four x 6
inches is the preferred size.
The figures must be oriented correctly
when submitted.
Figures should be size-matched (the
same physical size), unless the image
type prohibits the size-matching
of the figure to
other figures within
the manuscript, as in the case of
panoramic or periapical radiographos,
SEM images, or graphs. Do
not "label" the
faces of the figures
with letters or numbers to indicate
the order in which the figures should
appear, as such labels will be inserted
during the publication process.
Clinical figures should be color balanced.
The figures should be of professional
quality and high resolution. The following
guidelines with respect to
resolution must be followed:
Color and black-and-white
photographs should be created and
saved at a minimum of 300 dots per
inch (dpi). (Note: A 4 x 6-inch image
at a resolution of 300 dpi
will be approximately
6 megabytes, in terms
of file size.) A figure of less than 300
dpi must not be increased to 300
dpi; the resulting
quality and resolution
will be poor.
Color images should be saved
in the CMYK color space. Black and
white images should be saved
in the
Grayscale color space.
Line art should be created
and saved at 1200 dpi.
All images must be easily
readable and have good
contrast.
Clarity and quality should be uniform
among the parts of a multipart
figure, and among all of the figures
within the manuscript.
A uniform background, preferably
of a nontextured, medium
blue, should be provided for color
figures when possible.
Line art
and combination artwork is
best created in native design format,
such as EPS (Encapsulated Post-Script), Adobe Illustrator, InDesign,
etc., but should be saved as TIFF
(Tagged Image File Format) prior
to submission to the Journal. Color
and black-and-white photographs
are best created and saved as TIFF
images. If a key to an illustration requires
artwork (screen lines, dots,
unusual symbols), the key
should
be incorporated into the drawing
rather than included in the typed
legend. All symbols should be done
professionally, be visible
against the
background, and be of legible proportion
should the illustration be
reduced for publication. If text is to
appear in the
figures, both labeled
and unlabeled versions of the figures
must be submitted. The text appearing
within the labeled figures must
be
in Arial font. The text should be
sized to be easily read if the figure
is reduced in size when reproduced
in the Journal. It is recommended
that text no smaller than 10 point
be used. Lettering should be in proportion
to the drawing, graph, or
photograph. A consistent font
size
should be used throughout each
figure, and for all figures, to ensure
readability and professional appearance.
Please note: Titles
and legends
should not appear within the figure
file, but should be provided in the
manuscript text (see "Figure legends,"
below).
All microscopic photographs must
have a measurement bar and unit of
measurement on the image.
Color illustrations may be submitted
when their use considerably enhances
the value of the manuscript. The
Editor has final authority to determine
whether color illustrations
provide the most effective presentation.
Generally, a maximum of 8 figures
will be accepted for clinical reports
and dental technique articles, and 2
figures will be accepted for tips from
our readers articles. However, the
Editor may
approve the publication
of additional figures if they contribute
significantly to the manuscript.
File naming
Each figure must be numbered according
to its position the text (Figure
1, Figure 2, and so on), using Arabic
numerals. The electronic
image
files must be named so that the figure
number and format can be easily
identified. For example, a Figure 1 in
TIFF format should
be named fig1.
tif. Multipart figures must be clearly
identifiable by the file names: fig1A.
tif, fig1B.tif, fig1C.tif, etc.
Figure legends:
The figure legends should appear
within the text of the manuscript, on
a separate page following
the references
and tables, and should appear
under the heading "LEGENDS." If an
illustration is taken from previously
published material,
the legend must
give full credit to the source (see Permissions).Authors are obligated to
disclose whether illustrations have
been
modified in any way.
Graphs
The fill for bar graphs should be
distinctive and solid; shading
and
patterns should be avoided. Thick,
solid lines should be used, and bold,
solid lettering. Times New Roman
font is preferred. Place
lettering on
white background and avoid reverse
type (white lettering on a dark background).
The Journal reserves the
right to standardize
the format of
graphs and tables.
Permissions:
Permissions must be obtained for
direct quotations,
tables, and illustrations
that have appeared in copyrighted
material. The author must
provide a copy of written permission
for their
use from the copyright
owner and original author along
with complete information about
the source.
When photographs of identifiable
persons are used, said persons must
sign a release consent.
REVIEW PROCESS FOR PUBLICATION
Manuscripts are reviewed by the Editor,
editorial staff, and one or more
of the following: Associate Editor,
Assistant Editors, consultants,
and/
or reviewers. If a conflict of opinion
arises, an additional reviewer or
special consultant will be asked to serve as an adjudicator.
Qualified
statisticians review all studies that
draw conclusions from statistical
evidence.
Articles accepted for publication
are subject to editorial revision. The
Publisher and Editor's office reserve
the right to edit all manuscripts to
fit the space available
and to ensure
conciseness, clarity, and style consistency.
Three guidelines to assist authors
are available on the Journal
web site, www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ympr/home:
"Guidelines for Preparing
Articles for The Journal of
Prosthetic Dentistry," "Guidelines
for Reporting Statistical Results,"
and "An
Author's Guide to Controlling
the Photograph."
AUTHOR'S IDENTITY WITH COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS
Authors
who submit manuscripts for
possible publication may not directly
or indirectly advertise equipment,
instruments, or products with which
they have personal identity. Statements
and opinions expressed in the
articles and communications therein
are those of the author(s)
and not
necessarily those of the Editor(s) or
Publisher. The Editor(s) and Publisher
disclaim any responsibility or
liability for such
material. Neither the Editor(s) nor the Publisher guarantees,
warrants, or endorses any
product or service advertised in this
publication;
nor do they guarantee
any claim made by the manufacturer
of such product or service. Authors
must disclose any financial interest
that they may have in products
mentioned in their articles and any
compensation that they will receive
from a commercial company upon
publication of an article.
In accordance
with the Copyright Act of 1976, each author
must complete and sign a separate copy of the Copyright
Transfer/IRB Approval/HIPAA Compliance Statement
appearing on the last page of this section. This page may be copied
and completed, or the statement
can be accessed as a PDF form on
the Journal Web site (www.journals.elsevierhealth.com/periodicals/ympr/home). All statements should
be mailed or faxed to the Editorial
Office at the following address: Editorial
Office, The Journal of Prosthetic
Dentistry, Medical College of
Georgia School of Dentistry, 1120
15th St., AD-2943, Augusta, GA

OFFPRINTS AND CUSTOM REPRINTS
As of July 2007, complimentary author
reprints will no longer
be provided.
Because of the extremely high cost
of preparing color articles, author reprints
for articles with color illustrations
must
be prepared as overprints
(overrun pages). Order forms will be
sent to the corresponding author so
that offprints can be ordered before
the month of publication.
Custom reprints are prepared after
publication, do not contain any
pages from preceding or following
articles, and must be ordered directly
through Sauers Group, Inc. Send
requests to Brandt Haney, 1585
Roadhaven Drive, Stone Mountain,
GA 30083-1315. Telephone (770)
621-8857. E-mail: brandt.haney@sauersgroup.com. Only articles
published after May 2007
are available
through Sauers.
For reprints of articles published
prior to June 2007, contact the
Commercial Reprints Department,
