TISSUE AND CELL

Guide for Authors

Tissue & Cell has an online submission and peer review system. Manuscripts should be submitted online at External link http://ees.elsevier.com/tissueandcell/ and the instructions on the site should be followed closely. Authors may submit manuscripts and track their progress to final decision. Reviewers can download manuscripts and submit their reports to the editors.

Authors should submit five suggested reviewers by giving their name, address and e-mail.

Conflict of interest statement

All authors must disclose any financial and personal relationships with other people or organisations that could inappropriately influence (bias) their work, all within 3 years of beginning the work submitted. If there are no conflicts of interest, authors should state that there are none.

Three copies of each manuscript (original manuscript plus two extra copies for review) and three sets of illustrations (one set of publishable quality plus two good quality sets for review) should be submitted. In addition authors should send the abstract in electronic format (either by e-mail or computer disk) to the Editor at the submission stage. The electronic abstract may be used to help select available reviewers.

The name and address of the author should appear in the exact form required for publication. Please send the original typescript and illustrations together with two photocopies of the typescript and a further two sets of high quality illustrations.

The format for the title page is as follows: Title, Initials and last name of author #1*, Initials and last name of author #2, etc., Complete address of author #1, Complete address of author #2, etc., Running title: list an abbreviated title under 60 letters, Keywords: list up to 6 keywords, Acknowledgements, Correspondence author's details (including telephone and fax numbers and e-mail address), State if original or revised submission.

Abstracts

Manuscripts must be accompanied by an abstract of up to 200 words, typed on a separate sheet. In addition authors should send the abstract in electronic format (either on disk or by e-mail) at the submission stage. The electronic abstract may be used to help select available reviewers.

Reference Format

References should be arranged in alphabetical order by authors' names. The full title of each reference should be given, together with inclusive page numbers. Journal titles should be abbreviated in accordance with standard world lists. The style for references and for text citations should follow that shown in the current issue of this Journal. For example:

Afzelius, B.A., Bellon, P.L., Lanzavecchia, S., 1990. Microtubules and their protofilaments in the flagellum of an insect spermatozoon. J. Cell. Sci. 95, 207-217.

Jamieson, B.G.M., Afzelius, B.A., Dallai, R., 1999. Insects: Their Spermatozoa and Phylogeny. Science Publishers, Enfield, NH, 555, 105-112.

Figures

All illustrations, whether text-figures or photographs, should be numbered with Arabic numbers in one sequence and referred to in the text as Fig.1, Fig. 2 and so on. Text figures (line drawings, graphs etc.) should be prepared in a form suitable for reduction to a maximum of 240 x 175 mm (9 3/8 x 6 7/8 inches). The width of a single column in the Journal is 85 mm (3 5/16 inches). Original artwork must not exceed 305 x 229 mm (12 x 9 inches). Text figures should be fully labelled by the author.

Figure captions should be concise but informative, and should include a statement telling the reader why the figure is there or what question the experimental procedure answers. They should be listed on a separate sheet and placed at the end of the manuscript (after Tables, before Figures).

Photographs should be submitted on glossy paper. Three complete sets of photographs should be submitted. Photographs should be labelled, using either black or white transfer lettering. They should be submitted mounted on board with a border and with a protective tracing paper overlay (not plastic film). Photographs should be numbered by the author.

Magnifications should be indicated by using scale bars in each photograph.

Authors should submit half-tone illustrations (light or electron micrographs) singly or grouped into composite plates to a maximum size of 240 x 176 mm (9 3/8 x 6 7/8inches).

Gutters between illustrations must be 2 mm wide and all edges must be straight. Half-tone illustrations smaller than the above, to share the page with text, are acceptable (but see under Charges, below).

Colourful E-Products

Submit colour illustrations as original photographs, high-quality computer prints or transparencies, close to the size expected in publication, or as 35 mm slides. Polaroid colour prints are not suitable. If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable colour figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see External link http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authors.authors/authorartworkinstructions.

Charges to Authors

No page charge will be made. Colour plates will be produced if the author is prepared to finance their production; a quotation will be supplied on request.

Tables

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers and referred to in the text as Table 1, Table 2 and so on. Each table should be printed with its legend on a separate page after the references.

Preparation of supplementary data

Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier web products, including ScienceDirect: External link http://www.sciencedirect.com. In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. For more detailed instructions please visit: External link http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authors.authors/authorartworkinstructions.

Files can be stored on 3? inch diskette, ZIP-disk or CD (either MS-DOS or Macintosh).

Keywords

A list of up to six keywords should be supplied on the title page.

Short Notes: The Editor will endeavour to expedite handling of short communications of up to 2000 words and accompanied by up to 1.5 pages of diagrams and/or half-tone illustrations. Instructions for preparation of manuscripts (above) apply equally to short notes, and particular care should be given to preparation of micrographs, to ensure prompt publication of accepted manuscripts.

Disk/Electronic Submission

A computer disk, containing the same information as the submitted hard copy, should accompany the revised version of the manuscript. On the disk label indicate your name, the manuscript reference number, file name and format. PC (IBM) or Apple Macintosh compatible formats are acceptable. The text of your manuscript should be ordered similar to the hard copy and contained in a single file on the disk. Tables and Figure legends should be in a separate file. Computer generated figures will be handled conventionally and should not be included on the disk.

Copyright Information

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright see External link http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/copyright). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.

If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact ES Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford, OX5 1DX, UK; phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail: permissions@elsevier.com.

Corrections should be restricted to typesetting errors; any other amendments made may be charged to the author. Any queries should be answered in full.

Elsevier will do everything possible to get your article corrected and published as quickly and accurately as possible. Therefore it is important to ensure that all of your corrections are returned to us in one all-inclusive e-mail or fax.
