Peer Review Policy for EJSO

Peer Review Policy for the EJSO - the Journal of Cancer Surgery

The practice of peer review is to ensure that good science is published. It is an objective process at the heart of good scholarly publishing and is carried out on all reputable scientific journals. Our referees therefore play a vital role in maintaining the high standards of the EJSO and all manuscripts are peer reviewed following the procedure outlined below.

To help authors produce manuscripts of an acceptable standard, and to minimise the need for later revisions, we have published Guidelines for Scientific Writing in the EJSO which must be used.

The Editor-in-Chief assesses all manuscripts on receipt. Exceptional manuscripts may be accepted at this stage. Some may be rejected immediately if they are insufficiently original, have serious scientific flaws, or are outside the aims and scope of the EJSO. Those that meet the minimum criteria are passed on to at least two experts for review.

Type of peer review

The EJSO uses single blind review, where the referee remains anonymous throughout the process.

Referees are matched to the paper according to their expertise. Our database is constantly being updated. We welcome suggestions for referees from our authors.

Referees are asked to evaluate whether the manuscript:

• Is original
• Is fraudulent, or raises concerns as to duplicate publication
• Is methodologically sound
• Follows appropriate ethical guidelines
• Has results which are clearly presented and support the conclusions
• Correctly references previous relevant work

Our referees and editors have electronic search tools which allow them to cross check the literature very easily for fraud and duplicate publication. Where any concern is raised, the Editor-in-Chief will seek clarification from the authors before agreeing to proceed with the publication process.

Referees are not expected to correct or copyedit manuscripts. Language correction is not part of the peer review process, and authors should seek guidance and advice from those familiar with writing concise scientific English during manuscript preparation.

How long does the peer-review process take?

We aim to review the manuscript within six weeks, and select referees who review promptly. Our electronic systems are designed to facilitate rapid responses from the reviewers. Where the referees' reports differ or a report is delayed, the Editor-in-Chief will decide how to proceed. Referees' comments are for the guidance of the Editor-in-Chief and are not binding on the EJSO. We may request more than one revision of a manuscript to bring it to a standard acceptable for publication.

Final report and Editor-in-Chief's decision

Referees send their reports to the Editor-in-Chief, who is responsible for the final decision to accept or reject a manuscript. The final decision will be communicated to the author by the Editorial Office, together with recommendations made by the referees.
