Guide for Authors

The Review of Economic Dynamics publishes original articles on applications of dynamic economic theory to a wide variety of problems in economics. Related measurement and empirical papers are also welcomed.

Submission of Manuscripts

Authors are requested to submit their papers electronically by using online manuscript submission available at http://ees.elsevier.com/red. This site will guide authors stepwise through the submission process. Authors can upload their articles as LaTeX, Microsoft (MS) Word, or WordPerfect files. It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe Acrobat PDF format, but if the article is accepted, the original source files will be needed. If you submit a word processing file, the system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article, which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, reviewers, and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence is necessary. Should you be unable to provide an electronic version, please contact the Editorial Office at:

Review of Economic Dynamics
Editorial Office
525 B Street, Suite 1900
San Diego, CA 92101-4495, USA
Tel: (619) 699-6710
Fax: (619) 699-6859
E-mail: red@elsevier.com

There are no submission fees or page charges.

Submission of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors and tacitly or explicitly by the responsible authorities where the work was carried out, and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written consent of the copyright holder.

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to sign a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' (for more information on this and copyright see External link http://www.elsevier.com/copyright). Acceptance of the agreement will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. An e-mail (or letter) will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' form or a link to the online version of this agreement.
Subscribers may reproduce tables of contents or prepare lists of articles including abstracts for internal circulation within their institutions. Persmission of the Publisher is required for resale or distribution outside the institution and for all other derivative works, including compilations and translations (please consult External link http://www.elsevier.com/permissions).
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: please consult External link http://www.elsevier.com/permissions.

Availability of Data and Computer Code for Published Papers

Authors of accepted papers are required, after acceptance of the paper but before its publication, to provide to RED the data and computer code used in generating the results of the paper. This material will be posted on the journal's web site and should be sufficient to enable other researchers to replicate the results of the paper.

For papers that use empirical data, authors have to provide the final data sets used to obtain the empirical results of the paper, as well as the computer code(s) used to manipulate the data set. A readme.txt file should be included describing how the program(s) can be run. If the final data set was created from other sources, a description of how the final data set was created from the previous sources is also required. This description should be sufficiently detailed to allow other researchers to replicate the construction of the final data set.

For papers that contain numerical results authors have to provide the final programs that generate the results in the paper, plus a readme.txt file describing how the programs can be run, which program generates what results etc.

Any exemption to this policy has to be approved, at the time of submission, by the coordinating editor or RED, Narayana Kocherlakota.

Preparation of Manuscript

Manuscripts prepared using TeX or LaTeX are welcome; however, authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at External link http://www.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation. The manuscript will be edited according to the style of the journal, and authors must read the proofs carefully.

Manuscripts should be double-spaced throughout. Pages should be numbered consecutively.

The title page (p. 1) should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax numbers).

The abstract (p. 2) must be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. Use the abstract format required by the Journal of economic Literature (JEL) (http://www.aeaweb.org/journal/elclasjn.html). After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords that will be useful for indexing or searching should be included.

References should be cited in the text by last name(s) of the author(s) and year of publication enclosed in parentheses, e.g., Lucas (1972). In the list of references they should be organized alphabetically by the last name of the first author. Please note the following examples:

For unpublished lectures and symposia, include the title of the paper, name of the sponsoring society in full, and date. References should be double-spaced in the final submission of an accepted manuscript.

References in articles in Special Issues. Please ensure that the words 'this issue' are added to any references in the list (and any citations in the text) to other articles in the same Special Issue.

Figures should be submitted in EPS or TIFF format once a paper is accepted. Color or gray scale photographs should always use a minimum of 300 dpi. For bitmapped line drawings, use a minimum of 1000 dpi. For combination bitmapped line/halftone (color or gray scale), a minimum of 500 dpi is required. Please visit our Web site at External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

Color figures. Illustrations in color in the printed issue can be accepted only if the author defrays the cost. However, if together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions.

Please note: Because of technical complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable black-and-white files corresponding to all the color illustrations.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short descriptive title typed directly above and with essential footnotes below.

Preparation of Supplementary Material

Elsevier accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect: External link http://www.sciencedirect.com. In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. For more detailed instructions please visit our artwork instruction pages at External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions.

Proofs

Author Proofs and reprints
Page proofs will be sent electronically to the corresponding author. Proofs should be corrected carefully; the responsibility for detecting errors lies with the author. Corrections should be restricted to instances in which the proof is at variance with the manuscript. Extensive alterations will be charged.

A PDF file of the published article, including a cover sheet and a disclaimer outlining the terms and condition of use will be provided free of charge. Alternatively the corresponding author can choose to receive 50 complimentary reprints.
