Overview
Submission of papers:
Submission for all types of manuscripts to the
Journal of Fluids and Structures proceeds totally online via our Elsevier Editorial System (EES) website at
http://ees.elsevier.com/yjfls. When submitting
via the EES website, you will be guided through the creation and uploading of various files and data, as well as a submission letter.
Various formats are permitted for the initial submission, including PDF files. The final revision must be as a Word or other suitable
word processor document. When a Word or equivalent document is uploaded as the initial submission, the system automatically generates
an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing. All correspondence, including the editor's request for revision and final
decision, will be by e-mail.
Submission language: English (Link to the Oxford English Dictionary
http://dictionary.oed.com/entrance.dtl)
Authors in Japan kindly note that, upon request, Elsevier Japan will provide a list of people who can check and improve the English
of an article before submission. Contact our Tokyo office: Elsevier Japan K.K., 4F Higashi-Azabu, 1 Chome Bldg, 1-9-15 Higashi Azabu,
Minato-ku, Tokyo 106-044, Japan; Tel: 0081 3 5561 5032; Fax: 0081 3 5561 5045; e-mail:

Types
of contributions: The Journal publishes original full length papers and Brief Communications on (a) fundamental aspects of excitation
mechanisms and fluid-structure interaction processes, flow- and flow-acoustic excited phenomena, independent of any concrete application
or area of specialization; (b) application-orientated or -inspired papers dealing with fluid-structure interactions, flow-induced excitation,
flow-induced instability and vibration of structures in various fields - involving "internal flows", e.g. in piping, turbomachinary,
heat exchangers or physiological systems; or "external flows", e.g. in aeroelasticity and other relevant aeronautical applications, offshore
and marine problems, and wind-induced phenomena; (c) appropriate topics in unsteady fluid dynamics. Theoretical, analytical or computational,
and experimental research papers in any of the foregoing areas are of interest, as well as review articles. Important new findings,
new ideas and breakthroughs in the field may be published on a priority basis, extra fast as
Special Brief Communications.
Comments on previously published work and brief preliminary reports on new work, should be submitted as Brief Communications and
Letters to the Editor. Breakthrough-type Special Brief Communications should be submitted by fax.
Announcements of, and brief reports
on, relevant meetings or discussions may be submitted for publication. Books on Fluid-Structure Interactions or other closely related
subjects may also be submitted for review to the Editor.
Corresponding author: Clearly indicate who is responsible for
correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, including post-publication.
Ensure that telephone and fax numbers (with
country and area code) are provided, in addition to the e-mail address and the complete postal address. Full postal addresses must
be given for all co-authors. Please consult a recent journal paper for style if possible.
Original material: Submission
of an article implies that the work described has not been published previously (except in the form of an abstract or as part of a published
lecture or academic thesis), that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, that its publication is approved by all authors
and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, in English or in any other language, without the written
consent of the Publisher.
Editor's requirements:
For any item to be published in a given issue of the Journal, the
final manuscript must reach the Editor at least 14 weeks before the publication date.
Detailed instructions on manuscript
preparation and artwork instructions can be found below. The editor reserves the right to return manuscripts that do not conform to
the instructions for manuscript preparation and artwork instruction, as well as papers that do not fit the scope of the journal, prior
to refereeing.

Manuscript Preparation:
General:
Editors reserve the right to adjust style to certain standards
of uniformity. Please use Word, Word Perfect or LaTeX files for the text of your manuscript. (For further information about LaTeX submission,
please go to
http://www.elsevier.com/latex.)

Structure:
Follow this order when typing manuscripts: Title (an abbreviated title of less than 40 characters [including
spaces] should also be suggested if the full title is longer than this), Authors, Affiliations, Abstract (not exceeding 300 words in
length), Keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendix, References, Figure Captions and then Tables. In case a List of Symbols or
Nomenclature is part of the paper, it should be placed at the end of the Introduction. Collate acknowledgements in a separate section
at the end of the article and do not include them on the title page, as a footnote to the title or otherwise.
Special Brief
Communications should have no more than 2 to 4 figures
Letters need no abstract, nor the structure of a longer article
and could be written as a unitary text, and so on.

Text
Layout:
Use double spacing and wide (3 cm) margins. (Avoid full justification, i.e., do not use a constant right-hand
margin.) Ensure that each new paragraph is clearly indicated, preferably by indenting each new paragraph. Present tables and figure legends
on separate pages at the end of the manuscript. If possible, consult a recent issue of the journal to become familiar with layout and
conventions. Number all pages consecutively, use 12 or 10 pt font size and standard fonts.

Corresponding author:
Clearly indicate
who is responsible for correspondence at all stages of refereeing and publication, including post-publication.
Ensure that telephone
and fax numbers (with country and area code) are provided, in addition to the e-mail address and the complete postal address. Full
postal addresses must be given for all co-authors. Please consult a recent journal paper for style if possible.

Abstract:
A self-contained abstract
outlining in a single paragraph the aims, scope and conclusions of the paper must be supplied. Do not cite references in the Abstract.
If necessary use, e.g., "...as first developed by White in 1970", instead of "...by White (1970)."
Back
to the contents list
Keywords:
Immediately after the abstract,
provide a maximum of six keywords (avoid, for example, 'and', 'of'). Be sparing with abbreviations: only abbreviations firmly established
in the field may be eligible.
Back to the contents list
Symbols:
Mathematical symbols and formulae should be typed. All symbols should be normally typed in italics; except those
that should be in bold (e.g., vectors), which should be typed in bold. Exceptions are the Reynolds number, Re, the Strouhal number,
St, and other two-letter symbols, which should be typed in Roman. Also, subscripts which are words, e.g. in or out in
U
in
and
U
out, should be Roman, whereas
i and
o in
Ui
and
Uo
should be in italics. Particular care should be exercised in identifying all symbols and in avoiding ambiguities. Distinction should
be made between the number one (1) and the letter l and between zero (0) and the letter O.
Units:
Because of the international character of the journal, no rigid rules concerning notation or abbreviation need
be observed by authors, but each paper should be self-consistent as to symbols and units which should be properly defined; if non-SI
units are used, then the equivalent SI units or conversions should be given in at least a few cases, to aid the reader. All units should
be typed in Roman; e.g. 5.0 kg/m.
Back to the contents list
Maths:
Vectors and tensors should be marked clearly on the manuscript by being typed bold, or underscoring by a tilde.
Equation numbers should appear in parenthesis and be numbered consecutively. All equation numbers must appear on the right-hand side
of the equation and should be referred to within the text. Use the following sequence of parentheses: )]}.
References:
All publications cited in the text should be presented in a list of references following the text of the manuscript.
References should be listed on a separate page, alphabetically by the first author's name and given in
full. Citations in
the text should be by name or author and year, thus Smith and Jones (1990). Alternatively names and year may go in parentheses: e.g. "...as found previously (Smith and Jones 1990; Black and White, 1991)". If some text also appears within the parentheses,
do as follows: "...[e.g., see Smith and Jones (1990), Black and White (1991) and Brown (1993), and the references cited therein]".
If there are three or more authors' names, the first author's name should be used followed by et al.; e.g. Black et al. (1990). If
papers published in the same year by the same authors are referred to, add the letters a, b, c,...to the year: e.g., Black et al. (1989a,b)
or (White 1990b,c).
References should be given in the following form:
Bendat, J.S., Piersol, A., 1980. Engineering Applications
of Correlation and Spectral Analysis. Wiley Interscience, New York.
Belvins, R.D., Bressler, M.M., 1987. Acoustic resonance in

FREE ONLINE COLOUR
If, together with
your accepted article, you submit usable colour and black/white figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these
figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced
in colour in the printed version.
Please note: Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to
"grey scale" (for the black/white printed version of e-colour) please submit in addition usable black and white versions of all the
colour illustrations. Also make sure that in your captions and text you do not refer to colour, as the images will be black and white
in print, and references to colour will not make any sense to the reader of the print journal.
'Usable' means the formats comply
with our instructions. See the information about Illustrations at
http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions. For colour
illustrations in the print journal see Colour Costs above.

Tables:
Tables should be numbered consecutively and given suitable captions
and each table should begin on a new page. No vertical rules should be used. Tables should not duplicate results presented elsewhere
in the manuscript (for example, in graphs). Footnotes to tables should be typed below the table and should be referred to by superscript
lowercase letters.
