Guide for Authors
The Journal of Experimental Social Psychology is devoted to the publication of research and theory on social interaction and
related phenomena, including attitudes, social cognition and motivation, interpersonal relationships, and intragroup and intergroup processes.
The Journal does not specify appropriate topics for research, but rather seeks to publish significant work reflecting the entire breadth
of the field of social psychology. It is anticipated that most published manuscripts will report results of conceptually based empirical
research that advances social psychological theory. However, other types of papers, such as theoretical analyses, literature reviews,
and methodological comments, are also encouraged if they contribute significantly to an understanding of social processes. It is expected
that all empirical research submitted for consideration will have been conducted in a manner consistent with the American Psychological
Association's Ethical Principles in the Conduct of Research with Human Participants (1982)..
Types of Manuscripts
The
Journal of Experimental Social Psychology considers manuscripts in any of three sections. Articles have no restrictions on length.
Reports may be no longer than 5000 words of text.
FlashReports
are brief reports of research whose word count
must not be greater than 2500 words. In the case of
Reports and
FlashReports, the word limitation includes footnotes
but excludes references and the Abstract. The word count should be listed on the cover page for
Reports and
FlashReports.
Authors of
FlashReports may submit additional material with their documents that they would like reviewers to consider.
Examples may include the summary of additional statistical analyses not reported in the original document, a fuller description of the
procedure or a summary of additional conditions not considered essential in the published document. Supplementary material is not required
but, if submitted, will be limited to 1000 words. If the
FlashReport is accepted for publication, the supplementary material
will not appear in print, but in the journal online only.
Submission of Manuscripts
Manuscripts must be written in English.
Authors should submit their articles electronically via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) page of this journal (
http://ees.elsevier.com/jesp).
The system automatically converts source files to a single Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article, which is used in the peer-review
process. Please note that even though manuscript source files are converted to PDF at submission for the review process, these source
files are needed for further processing after acceptance. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests
for revision, takes place by e-mail and via the Author's EES homepage, removing the need for a hard-copy paper trail.
Original papers
only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it
is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors
and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved
such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Papers published in the J
ournal of Experimental
Social Psychology represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and
the Publisher.
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see
http://www.elsevier.com/authorsrights). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter
will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided
after acceptance.
If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright
owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global
