Guide for Authors
Journal of Approximation Theory
http://www.elsevier.com/locate/jat
The
Journal of Approximation
Theory is devoted to pure and applied approximation theory and related areas. Criteria for publication include novelty, importance,
and clarity of presentation.
Submission of Manuscripts
Authors are requested to submit their papers electronically by
using online manuscript submission available at
http://ees.elsevier.com/jat This site will guide authors stepwise through
the submission process. Authors can upload their articles as LaTeX, Microsoft (MS) Word, or WordPerfect files. The Elsevier LaTeX package
(including detailed instructions for LaTeX preparation) can be obtained from the Quickguide:
http://www.elsevier.com/latex.
It consists of the files: elsart.cls, guidelines for users of elsart, a template file for quick start, and the instruction booklet "Preparing
articles with LaTeX".
It is also possible to submit an article in PostScript or Adobe Acrobat PDF format, but if the article is accepted,
the original source files will be needed. If authors submit word processing files, the system generates an Adobe Acrobat PDF version
of the article, which is used for the reviewing process. Authors, reviewers, and editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail
and no paper correspondence is necessary.
Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding
that the same work has not been and will not be nor is currently submitted elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been
approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal
communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material
published in the
Journal of Approximation Theory represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect
the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.
Copyright and Permissions
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will
be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see
http://www.elsevier.com/authorsrights). This transfer
will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of
the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided after acceptance.
If material from other copyrighted works
is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier
has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier Global Rights Department, P.O. Box 800, Oxford OX5 1DX, UK;
phone: (+44) 1865 843830, fax: (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail:
permissions@elsevier.com.
Preparation of Manuscript
Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available on the Elsevier Quickguide at
http://www.elsevier.com/latex.
Please write your text in good English (American or British usage is accepted, but not a mixture of these). Italics are to be used
for expressions of Latin origin, for example, in vivo, et al., per se. Authors who require information about language editing and copyediting
services pre- and post-submission please visit
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/languagepolishing or
contact
authorsupport@elsevier.com for more information. Please note Elsevier neither endorses nor takes responsibility
for any products, goods or services offered by outside vendors through our services or in any advertising. For more information please
refer to our Terms & Conditions
http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/termsconditions.cws_home/termsconditions.
Manuscripts
should be double-spaced throughout. Number all pages consecutively and organize the paper as follows.
Title page (page
1). This page should contain the article title, authors' names and complete affiliations, footnotes to the title, and the address for
manuscript correspondence (including e-mail address and telephone and fax number).
Abstract (page 2). The abstract must
be a single paragraph that summarizes the main findings of the paper in less than 150 words. After the abstract a list of up to 10 keywords
that will be useful for indexing or searching must be included.
Footnotes. In text, footnotes should be avoided. If absolutely
necessary, identify them by superscript Arabic numerals in order of their appearance and type them together on a separate page, double-spaced.
Equations. All equations should be typewritten and the numbers for displayed equations should be placed in parentheses
at the right margin. References to equations should use the form ''Eq. (3)'' or simply ''(3).''
References to the literature
should be cited by Arabic numerals between brackets as [1], [1,2], [1, Theorem 1.5] in the text and listed in numerical order at the
end. Please note the following examples:
[1] R.Q. Jia, J.J. Lei, Approximation by multi-integer translates of functions having global
support, J. Approx. Theory 72 (1993)
2-23.
[2] A.G. Ramm, Multidimensional Inverse Scattering Problems, Longman/Wiley, New York,
1992.
[3] Y. You, Polynomial solutions of BKP hierarchy and projective representation of symmetric groups, in: Advanced Series in
Mathematical Physics, Vol. 17, World Science, Singapore, 1989.
For unpublished lectures or symposia, include the title of the paper,
name of the sponsoring society in full, and the date. For journal names, follow ''Abbreviations of Names of Serials reviewed in
Mathematical
Reviews'' (American Mathematical Society, 1995). When in doubt about employing certain abbreviations, use clarity as a guide.
Tables. Number tables consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of appearance in the text. Type each table double-spaced on
a separate page with a short descriptive title directly above and essential footnotes below.
Figures. Number figures with
Arabic numerals. Digital artwork of at least 300 dpi resolution is accepted in EPS or TIFF format. Please visit our Web site at
http://www.elsevier.com/artwork
for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork. Type all legends consecutively on a separate page.
Color art
is permissible, but the extra printing costs will be charged to the author. However, if together with your accepted article you submit
usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect
and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in
print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information
on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see
http://www.elsevier.com/artwork
Please note: Because of technical
complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you not opt for color in print),
please submit in addition usable black-and-white files corresponding to all the color illustrations.
Preparation of Supplementary
Material
Elsevier now accepts electronic supplementary material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary
files offer additional possibilities for publishing supporting applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background
datasets, sound clips, and more. Supplementary files supplied will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article
in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect (
http://www.sciencedirect.com).
To ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please provide the data in one of our recommended file formats. Authors should
submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption for each file. Please
note, however, that supplementary material will not appear in the printed journal. For more detailed instructions, please visit
Elsevier?s
Quickguide at
http://www.elsevier.com and then click on "Multimedia files."
Proofs
PDF proofs will be
sent by e-mail to the corresponding author. Corrections should be returned promptly.
