Guide for Authors
Historia Mathematica publishes original research on the history of the mathematical sciences in all periods.
Submission
of Manuscripts
Articles should be submitted online using the Historia Mathematica Web site at http://ees.elsevier.com/yhmat. Electronic files accepted include PDF, PostScript, Word, DVI, and LaTeX. The Elsevier LaTeX package (including detailed instructions
for LaTeX preparation) can be obtained from the Quickguide:  http://www.elsevier.com/latex. It consists of the files: elsart.cls,
guidelines for users of elsart, a template file for quick start, and the instruction booklet "Preparing articles with LaTeX". Minimal
exceptions will be allowed. If you are unable to provide an electronic version of your paper, please contact the Editorial Office prior
to submission:

Papers are refereed by at least two
specialists. If your paper has been refereed by another journal or read by a colleague, include this information in your submittal letter.
Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been and will not be submitted elsewhere, and that
its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further,
that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the
Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in Historia Mathematica represent the opinions of the author(s)
and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editors and the Publisher.
Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article,
authors will be asked to sign a "Journal Publishing Agreement" (for more information on this and copyright see http://www.elsevier.com/copyright).
Acceptance of the agreement will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. An e-mail (or letter) will be sent to the corresponding
author confirming receipt of the manuscript together with a 'Journal Publishing Agreement' form or a link to the online version of this
agreement.
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright
owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier's Rights

Form of Manuscript
Manuscripts should be double-spaced, with margins of 2.5 cm. All pages should be numbered. To protect anonymity in review, the author's
name, academic affiliation, and address should appear only on a cover page.
Abstracts and Notes on Contributors. An English
abstract of no more than 100 words should be submitted, along with an abstract in one other language pertinent to the topic of the article.
Beneath the abstracts, please enter the relevant 2000 Mathematics Subject Classification (MSC 2000) code numbers. These may be found
at http://www.ams.org/mathweb/msc2000/. These should be followed
by three to seven keywords that would be useful in identifying it for reference purposes. Also send a brief biographical sketch no longer
than 500 characters (written in the third person) to be used in the "Notes on Contributors." Include your current affiliation, research
interests, and mention of a recent publication.
Footnotes. Minimize footnotes by including material in the text and references
(by annotation). Indicate footnotes by superscript numbers in the text. Footnotes will be typeset at the bottom of the page on which
they occur. If your word-processing program automatically places footnotes at the bottom of the page, please utilize this feature. Otherwise,
please type footnotes together on a separate page, double-spaced, and identified by superscript.
References. Give all cited
references at the end of the article in a single alphabetical list by author and year. If more than one publication is listed for the
same author(s) and year, adjoin lowercase letters to the year: 1998a, 1998b. If works have been reprinted or have appeared in several
different versions, this should be explained clearly whenever necessary. Such works should be keyed to the year of original publication;
if page references are based on a later version or edition, this should be explained. If it helps to avoid confusion, both the original
year and the year of the edition you are using may be indicated. Citations of references in the text should be by author's name and
year of publication; for example, [Smith, 1910, I, 225–227] means Volume I, pp. 225–227 of the item by Smith published in
1910. Please note the following examples:

Figures, Illustrations,
etc. Number figures, photographs, and facsimiles; supply captions with credits; refer to each in the text and indicate placement.

Authors who plan to use illustrations, charts, tables, or other material from previously published sources must obtain written permission
from the copyright owner (this is usually the publisher). Authors should write to the author of the original material to obtain permission
as a courtesy. If an author uses material from his or her own published work, permission must still be obtained from the publisher. The
source of data must always be credited in the exact manner noted on granted permission forms, for example, in a footnote to a table,
in a figure legend, etc.
If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at
no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether
these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding
the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please
see http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions. [Please
note: Because of technical complications that can arise in converting color figures to "gray scale" (for the printed version should you
not opt for color in print), please submit in addition usable black-and-white files corresponding to all the color illustrations.]
Special Characters. If you use characters (for example, Chinese, Cyrillic) other than Latin or Greek alphabets and common mathematical
symbols, you must supply PDF files and indicate placement.
Preparation of Supplementary Material
Elsevier accepts supplementary
material to support and enhance your scientific research. Supplementary files offer the author additional possibilities to publish supporting
applications, movies, animation sequences, high-resolution images, background datasets, sound clips and more. Supplementary files supplied
will be published online alongside the electronic version of your article in Elsevier Web products, including ScienceDirect: http://www.sciencedirect.com.
In order to ensure that your submitted material is directly usable, please ensure that data is provided in one of our recommended file
formats. Authors should submit the material in electronic format together with the article and supply a concise and descriptive caption
