ANNALS OF PHYSICS

Guide for Authors

Annals of Physics is devoted to the publication of papers describing original work in all areas of basic physics research. Original papers only will be considered. Manuscripts are accepted for review with the understanding that the same work has not been published, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere, and that its submission for publication has been approved by all of the authors and by the institution where the work was carried out; further, that any person cited as a source of personal communications has approved such citation. Written authorization may be required at the Editor's discretion. Articles and any other material published in Annals of Physics represent the opinions of the author(s) and should not be construed to reflect the opinions of the Editor(s) and the Publisher.

Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer copyright (for more information on copyright, see External link http://elsevier.com/authorsright). This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.

If material from other copyrighted works is included, the author(s) must obtain written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by authors in these cases: contact Elsevier's Rights Department, Oxford, UK: phone (+44) 1865 843830, fax (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail permissions@elsevier.com. Requests may also be completed online via the Elsevier homepage (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/permissions).

Submission of Manuscripts

Submission to this journal proceeds totally online. Use the following guidelines to prepare your article. Please go to External link http://ees.elsevier.com/aop/. You will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. The system automatically converts source files to a single Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article, which is used in the peer-review process. Please note that even though manuscript source files are converted to PDF at submission for the review process, these source files are needed for further processing after acceptance. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests for revision, takes place by e-mail and via the author's homepage, removing the need for a hard-copy paper trail.

Preparation of Manuscripts

Authors are strongly encouraged to use the LaTeX template available at External link http://www.elsevier.com/latex for manuscript preparation.

Each page should be numbered, and page 1 should contain the article title, author and co-author names, complete affiliation(s) (name of institution, city, state, and zip code), contact information (e-mail address and fax and telephone numbers), and a short abstract.

Language polishing. Authors who require information about language editing and copyediting services pre- and post-submission should visit http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/authorshome.authors/languagepolishing or contact authorsupport@elsevier.com for more information. Please note Elsevier neither endorses nor takes responsibility for any products, goods or services offered by outside vendors through our services or in any advertising. For more information please refer to our Terms and Conditions at http://www.elsevier.com/wps/find/termsconditions.cws_home/termsconditions.

Style. In general, authors should be guided by the latest edition of the Style Manual of the American Institute of Physics, 335 East 45 Street, New York, NY 10017.

Figures should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals in order of mention in the text; each figure should have a descriptive legend. Legends should be presented separately, double-spaced, like the text. Please visit our Web site at External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions for detailed instructions on preparing electronic artwork.

If, together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the Web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see External link http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions.

Tables should be numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Prepare each table double-spaced on a separate page with a short, descriptive title appearing directly above and with essential footnotes below.

Equations should appear with the number in parentheses at the right margin. Reference to equations should use the form "Eq. (3)" or simply (3).

References. Cite references in the text by an Arabic numeral between square brackets, as [1], [1, 2], [1, Theorem 1.5], etc. References should appear consecutively on a separate page, double- or triple-spaced throughout and styled as follows:

Footnotes in text should be avoided if at all possible. If they must be used, identify by superscript numbers and type together on a separate page, double- or triple-spaced.

Proofs

One set of page proofs in PDF format will be sent by e-mail to the corresponding author. Elsevier now sends PDF proofs that can be annotated; for this you will need to download Adobe Reader version 7, available free from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html. Instructions on how to annotate PDF files will accompany the proofs. If you do not wish to use the PDF annotations function, you may list the corrections (including replies to the Query Form) and return to Elsevier in an e-mail. Please list your corrections quoting line number. If, for any reason, this is not possible, then mark the corrections and any other comments (including replies to the Query Form) on a printout of your proof and return by fax, or scan the pages and e-mail, or by post.
