Infant Behavior and Development is an archival journal that publishes reports of research, both human and animal, that contribute
significantly to our understanding of behavior through the second year of life. Theoretical articles, attempts to replicate, and commentaries
are occasionally considered, but preference is given to original research articles. Authors should submit their articles electronically
via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) page for this journal http://ees.elsevier.com/infbeh.
Submissions must be accompanied
by a statement that the research was conducted in accordance with APA ethical standards in the treatment of the study sample, both animal
and human. Do not submit original artwork until requested. Manuscripts in excess of 25 pages (total) must be accompanied by
a statement from the author justifying why. Authors are invited to submit the names, addresses, and particular areas of expertise of
individuals who would be appropriate reviewers. The relation of the individual to the author should be specified (former colleague, student,
co-author, professional acquaintance, etc.).
1. Manuscript Preparation. Submissions must conform
in all respects to the format
specified in the Publication
Manual of the American Psychological Association (5th Edition,
1994), or they will be returned
without review. (Copies
may be ordered from APA Order Dept., P.O. Box 2710,
Hyattsville, MD 20784.) This requirement applies to the
format
for tables and figures. (Exceptions for a Brief Report
appear below.) Four to six key words must be listed on a
separate line following
the abstract. Authors are responsible
for obtaining permissions-to-publish both from copyright
holders and authors for illustrations,
tables, or lengthy quotes
published elsewhere. All submissions must be double-spaced
in 10- or 12-point type with 1-inch margins on all
sides of
8 ½ x 11-inch bond paper. On the title page (p. 1), list the
current address of the leading author. The corresponding
author must also provide a complete postal address, e-mail,
fax number, and telephone number on the bottom left of the
title page. Information
concerning research and acknowledgments
should be listed in a paragraph titled, "Acknowledgments.
"This will appear at the end of the
text. The abstract
(p. 2) may not exceed 150 words. Chapters cited in referencesmust include page numbers; presentations at
meetingsmust include year and month. Do not cite unpublished or
submitted manuscripts in References (cite in text
as "personal
communication" with complete date), and do not use
titles (e.g., Dr., RN) when acknowledging individuals. Use
American spelling
and standard international units (e.g., cm,
kg); avoid jargon. All measures of central tendency must be
accompanied by SDs or SEs. Notes should be used sparingly
and indicated by consecutive superscript numbers in the text.
Notes should be typed separately
at the end of the document
before the References.
2. Brief Reports. A Brief Report is simply a short
paper; pilot studies
and articles of lesser quality are not
acceptable. It should be prepared in the same format as a
full-size manuscript except that it
has only a 45-word
abstract, no special headings (Method, Participants, Apparatus,
Procedure, Results, Discussion), and must not
exceed
8 typed pages including references, tables, and
figures but excluding abstract and title pages. Authors
must state
that a fuller report will be provided upon
request in "Acknowledgments."
3. Policy on Multiple Publications. (IBAD,
1994,
Vol. 17, No. 1). Multiple or piecemeal publication of data
from the same study are not acceptable. Authors must
inform the Editor
if data in a submitted manuscript have
been reported elsewhere and how the present study is
different. Authors must also submit, in quadruplicate,
copies of closely related manuscripts that are published, in
press, or under review by another journal and that report
data from the
same study.
4. Policy on Sample Information. (IBAD, 1997,
Vol. 20, No. 1). Authors must report complete information
about their study sample composition, including sex,
race/ethnicity, occupational status, and educational attainment.
Minimally, this
requires use of current and codable
occupational categories (e.g., Nakao, K., & Treas, J.,
1992, The 1989 Socioeconomic Index of
Occupations:
Construction from the 1989 Occupational Prestige Scores.
General Social Survey Methodological Reports, #74. Chicago,
IL:
NORC), four educational attainment categories
(without H.S. diploma, H.S. graduate without college education,
some college education,
degree from 4-year college
or more), and five race/ethnicity categories (e.g., U.S.
Bureau of Census). The reference person for this
information
must be specified. The study-sampling strategy
must also be specified.
5. Electronic Submission. Authors should
submit their articles electronically via the Elsevier Editorial System (EES) page of this journal http://ees.elsevier.com/infbeh.
The system automatically converts source files to a single Adobe Acrobat PDF version of the article, which is used in the peer-review
process. Please note that even though manuscript source files are converted to PDF at submission for the review process, these source
files are needed for further processing after acceptance. All correspondence, including notification of the Editor's decision and requests
for revision, takes place by e-mail and via the Author's homepage, removing the need for a hard-copy paper trail.
6. References.
Contributors should refer to the APA
Publication Manual for the correct listing of references in
the text and reference list. References
in text and reference
section must be checked for consistency of spelling and
dates. Chapters in books must be accompanied by page
number
per APA format.

7. Corrections Policy.
Authors will be sent page
proofs prior to publication (along with their copy-edited
manuscript) and are expected to return them as immediately
as possible to the Editor, Geert Savelsbergh (address
listed above), who will review and finalize corrections
before returning them to
the publisher.
8. Complimentary Copies and Offprints. The lead
author will receive 25 free offprints. Additional off-prints
can be ordered when page proofs are returned (an
offprint order form will be included with instructions
for correction of proofs).
