Guide for Authors

An International Journal on the Physics and Chemistry of Optical Materials and their Applications, including Devices

Submission of papers

Manuscripts should be submitted online only to the Optical Materials web site at External link http://ees.elsevier.com/om/. Please consult first the Tutorial for Authors before beginning the submission procedure.

Original material. Submission of a manuscript implies that the paper is not being simultaneously considered for publication elsewhere and that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication.

Refereeing. Submitted papers will be refereed and, if necessary, authors may be invited to revise their manuscript. Authors are encouraged to list the names (addresses and telephone numbers) of up to five individuals outside their institution who are qualified to serve as referees for their paper. The referees selected will not necessarily be from the list suggested by the author.

Type of contributions

The journal Optical Materials publishes regular articles and reviews in the field of optical materials.

Manuscript preparation

All manuscripts should be written in good English. The paper copies of the text should be prepared with double line spacing and wide margins, on numbered sheets. See notes below on electronic version of manuscripts.

Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Article title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, PACS codes and keywords, Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables.

Corresponding author. The name, complete postal address, telephone and Fax numbers and the E–mail address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the manuscript.

PACS codes/keywords. Please supply one or more relevant PACS-1996 classification codes and 1-6 keywords of your own choice for indexing purposes. Click here for a guide to PACS codes.

References. References to other work should be consecutively numbered in the text using square brackets and listed by number in the Reference list. References should not contain footnotes. See the following example of acceptable reference format:

Following general experience in the growth of huntite borates [7]...

7. N.I. Leonyuk and L.I. Leonyuk Prog. Cryst. Growth. Charact. 31 (1995), p. 179.

Illustrations

Illustrations should also be submitted in triplicate: one master set and two sets of copies. The line drawings in the master set should be original laser printer or plotter output or drawn in black india ink, with careful lettering, large enough (3-5 mm) to remain legible after reduction for printing. Thephotographs should be originals, with somewhat more contrast than is required in the printed version. They should be unmounted unless part of a composite figure. Any scale markers should be inserted on the photograph itself, not drawn below it. Please refer to http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructions for more information.

Colour plates. Figures may be published in colour, if this is judged essential by the editor. The publisher and the author will each bear part of the extra costs involved. Further information is available from the publisher.

After acceptance

Important. When page proofs are made and sent out to authors, this is in order to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. No changes in, or additions to, the edited manuscript will be accepted.

Copyright transfer. You will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.

Track a paper. Authors can now track their paper status online after the paper has been accepted and forwarded to the Publisher. Enter your Elsevier reference number (OPTMAT xxx) and the Corresponding author's family name at the following web page: http://www.elsevier.com/trackarticle. Corresponding authors will receive an acknowledgement email from Elsevier with the reference number and the family name on it. Authors can also go to the 'track a paper' page by clicking onto the 'track a paper' button on the left hand side of the journal home page.

Electronic manuscripts

The Publisher welcomes the receipt of an electronic version of your accepted manuscript. If you have not already supplied the final, revised version of your article (on diskette) to the Journal Editor, you are requested to send a file with the text of the accepted manuscript directly to the Publisher by e-mail or on diskette to the Editor's address given above. Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the Editor of the journal are permissible without the prior and explicit approval by the Editor. Such changes should be clearly indicated on an accompanying printout of the file.

Author benefits

Free offprints. The corresponding author, at no cost, will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail. The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use.
