Guide for Authors

Submission Procedure

Submission of manuscripts to this journal proceeds totally online, by means of the electronic submission tool (EES) at External link http://www.ees.elsevier.com/him. After registration, authors will be asked to upload their article and associated artwork. The submission tool generates an automatic reply that incorporates the manuscript for future correspondence. Articles are submitted via EES to the Editor-in-Chief, who will arrange for their quick evaluation. To assist in this process, authors are asked to supply the names and e-mail addresses of three persons who could act as referees for the paper or the names of three individuals who the authors would like to exclude as referees. Full instructions on how to use the online submission tool are available at the above web address.

Authors must include a cover letter that contains the title, the authors, a brief outline of the work's originality, the desired section of publication (e.g., Cellular Immunology and Immune Regulation, Immunogenetics, or Clinical Immunology), corresponding author's name, address, telephone and fax numbers (including country and city codes), and e-mail address, the total number of pages (including references, acknowledgments, tables, etc.), and the total number of figures.

Submission of an article to this journal assumes that the article has not been published elsewhere and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. If an abstract has appeared, then this should be noted in the covering letter. Submission further assumes that all named authors agree with the submission. Papers should be submitted in good English and should meet all of the requirements listed under Preparation of Manuscripts below. Upon request, Elsevier will direct authors to an agent who can check and improve the English of their paper before submission. Please contact autorsupport@elsevier.com for further information.

Page charges. This journal has no page charges.

Copyright. Upon receipt of an article, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the society. This transfer will ensure the widest dissemination of information under US copyright law. This does not imply an obligation by the journal to publish, and if the article is not accepted the copyright form will be returned with its article.

Types of Articles

Research Articles are full-length manuscripts that describe significant experimental findings. Typically these should be no more than 4000 words (excluding references, tables and figures), with an abstract of a maximum of 200 words and up to 50 references.

Brief Communications should be limited to 2500 words, with an abstract of 150 words maximum and up to 30 references.

Review articles should be no more than 5000 words (excluding references, tables and figures), with an abstract of 200 words maximum and up to 80 references.

Reports of Meetings or Workshops, Editorials, and Reviews. A letter of inquiry should be sent to the Editor, prior to the submission of these materials.

Preparation of Articles

The manuscript should include the following sections: Title Page, Abstract (not more than 200 words), Keywords (up to 5), Abbreviations (list of abbreviations used), Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Tables, Figure Legends, and Figures.

The title page should include the names and affiliations of the authors, the complete address, e-mail address, and telephone and facsimile numbers of the corresponding author, five keywords, and an abbreviated title of not more than 45 characters and spaces. Footnotes in the text should be defined on the page on which they appear and be numbered consecutively with superscript Arabic numerals.

References. Identify references in the text by Arabic numerals in brackets, and number consecutively in the References section in the order they are first mentioned. References should follow the standard "Vancouver" style. List all authors, but if the number exceeds six, give only the first six followed by et al.

Examples:

Journal. Leen MPJM, Gorski J. Differential expression of isomorphic HLA-DR genes is not a sole function of transcription. Hum Immunol 1996;50:111-15.

Book. Peter JB, Shoenfeld Y. Autoantibodies. Amsterdam: Elsevier; 1996.

Chapter in a book. Bendtzen K, Hansen MB, Ross C, Svenson M. Cytokine autoantibodies. In: Peter JB, Shoenfeld Y, editors. Autoantibodies. Amsterdam: Elsevier; 1996.

Tables. Each table should be typed double-spaced on a separate page, and numbered with Arabic numerals in the order of reference in the text. Use only horizontal rules. Table titles should be informative, with detailed information appearing as footnotes and identified in the table by superscript letters.

Figures. Authors should consult the Elsevier website for guidelines for preparing (electronic) artwork: External link http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork. N.B. With web submission, only the following formats are acceptable: TIFF, PDF and EPS. Please keep in mind that in the journal illustrations will appear either across a single column (=8.3 cm) or a whole page (=17.6 cm). The illustrations should be numbered in Arabic numerals according to the sequence of appearance in the text, where they are referred to as Fig. 1, Fig. 2, etc.

Color figures. If together with your accepted article, you submit usable color figures, then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in color on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect and other sites) regardless of whether these illustrations are reproduced in color in the printed version. For color reproduction in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted article. For further information on the preparation of electronic artwork, please see External link http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

DNA sequences and GenBank accession numbers. Authors wishing to enable other scientists to use the accession numbers cited in their papers via links to these sources should type this information in the following manner:

For each and every accession number cited in an article, authors should type the accession number in bold, underlined text. Letters in the accession number should always be capitalized (see example below). This combination of letters and format will enable the typesetter to recognize the relevant texts as accession numbers and add the required link to GenBank's sequences.

Example: GenBank accession nos. AI631510 , AI631511 , AI632198 , and BF223228 ), a B-cell tumor from a chronic lymphatic leukemia (GenBank accession no. BE675048 ), and a T-cell lymphoma (GenBank accession no. AA361117 ).

Authors are encouraged to check accession numbers used very carefully. An error in a letter or number can result in a dead link.

In the final version of the printed article, the accession number text will not appear bold or underlined. In the final version of the electronic copy, the accession number text will be linked to the appropriate source in the NCBI databases, enabling readers to go directly to that source from the article.

Proofs and Offprints

Proofs will be sent to the author by e-mail to be carefully checked for file conversion errors. Changes or additions to the edited manuscript cannot be allowed at this stage. Corrected proofs should be returned to the publisher within two days of receipt. It is important to ensure that all corrections are sent back to us in one communication. The corresponding author, at no cost, will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail or, alternatively, 50 free paper offprints. The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer outlining the terms and conditions of use. Additional offprints may be ordered at the price listed on the order form that will be sent from the Publisher.

Author inquiries. Visit External link http://www.elsevier.com/authors for the facility to track accepted articles and set up e-mail alerts to inform you when an article's status has changed. The Elsevier site also provides detailed artwork guidelines, copyright information, frequently asked questions and more. Contact details for questions arising after acceptance of an article, especially those relating to proofs, are provided after registration of an article for publication..
