CANCER GENETICS AND CYTOGENETICS

Guide for Authors

Manuscripts should be submitted to Editor-in-Chief: Dr. Avery A. Sandberg, Cancer Genetics and Cytogenetics, Department of DNA Diagnostics, St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center, 350 West Thomas Road, Phoenix, AZ 85013, USA (Tel: 602-406-3588; Fax: 602-406-4118; E-mail: jvaugha@chw.edu). In addition to full-length research papers, Short Communications (no longer than 4 printed pages) and Letters-to-the-Editor (no longer than 2 printed pages) may be submitted. Review and Special articles will be published from time to time by invitation or arrangement with the Editor-in-Chief. Editorials may also be published from time to time. Book Reviews will be published as space permits. Manuscripts are submitted with the understanding that they are original unpublished work and are not being submitted elsewhere.

Manuscript. A computer disk must accompany the manuscript. Type double-spaced on 8½ x 11 in. bond paper. All materials are to be submitted in triplicate. On the title page, include full names of authors (no degrees), academic or professional affiliations, and complete address for the corresponding author. The phone and fax number and e-mail address (if available) of the corresponding author must be included. Except for Letters-to-the-Editor, all articles must include an abstract of up to 200 words. All tables, numbered with Arabic numerals, should have brief descriptive titles. Please use horizontal rules only. Authors not fluent in the English language should have their manuscripts edited by an expert in the language, prior to submission to the journal, thus avoiding delays in the review and publication of their papers. The journal will follow strictly the cytogenetic nomenclature and karyotype depictions given in ISCN 2005. Human gene names should be written in italicized capital letters and Arabic numbers. Any abbreviations should be defined when first used and be consistent throughout the text. Normal laboratory values should be provided in parentheses when first used. Authors seeking information about the status of their accepted papers can log-in at External link http://authors.elsevier.com (the reference number needed to track the paper will be sent by Elsevier as soon as the paper is received for publication).

Revised manuscript. Two copies of the revised text and pictorial materials with disk should be returned to the Editor-in-Chief, along with a detailed list of the revisions made. If changes suggested by the reviewers are not made by the authors, justification of this must also be submitted.

Computer disks. Please, observe the following: 1. Send a hard copy of your paper together with a disk (a disk should be included with the first submission and each subsequent revision). 2. Make sure that the disk and the hard copy match exactly. Please, note that failure to submit a computer disk will result in delays in publication. 3. Specify what software was used, including which release, e.g., Word 2000. 4. Specify what computer was used (IBM-compatible PC, Apple Macintosh, etc.). 5. The article file should include all textual material (text, references, tables, figure captions, etc.) and separate illustration files, if available. 6. The file should follow the general instructions on style/arrangement and, in particular, the reference style of this journal as given below. 7. The file should be single-spaced and should use the wrap-around end-of-line feature, i.e., returns at the end of the paragraphs only. Place two returns after every element such as title, headings, paragraphs, figure and table call-outs. 8. Keep a backup disk for reference.

Illustrations. At least 3 glossy or high-quality prints of karyotypes are to be submitted with the manuscript. If submitting electronic art, for karyotypes specifically, please provide the graphics as JPG, PDF, or TIFF files for the highest print production quality. Authors must label in black numbers the chromosomes accurately, both normal and abnormal, but refrain from including annotations, which should appear in the legend. For line artwork, submit black-ink drawings of professional quality or glossies of originals. Duplicates may be photocopies. On the back of each illustration, give the first author's name, number of the figure, and indication of "top." The legends to figures must match the information in the illustrations, and must be typed on separate pages. For more information on submission guidelines for figures, visit External link http://authors.elsevier.com/artwork.

Color art. Authors must enclose a letter agreeing to pay the color charge upon submission of their manuscript because such agreement must be received by the journal before the article can be published. Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, the exact charge will be determined by the publisher and a color agreement faxed or e-mailed to you in the form of a PDF. As a guideline, color artwork supplied with your article will appear in color on the web - at no charge. For reproduction of color illustrations in print, there is a $650 charge for the first color picture and &dollar100 for every additional color picture in the article.

References. Authors must follow the instructions given. References are to be listed and numbered consecutively in the order in which they are cited in the text and not presented alphabetically. Include names of all authors for each reference. Authors are responsible for completeness and accuracy of all references. Citation in the text is by number in brackets, i.e. [1]. Periodical abbreviations should follow those given by Index Medicus. References must be styled as follows:

Journal. Maarek O, Salabelle A, Le Coniat MB, Daniel MT, Berger R. Chromosome 16 inversion-associated translocation: two new cases. Cancer Genet Cytogenet 1999;114:126-9.

Book. Sandberg AA, Bridge JA. The cytogenetics of bone and soft tissue tumors. Austin: RG Landes Co., 1994.

Chapter. Sandberg AA, Chen Z. Cancer cytogenetics: nomenclature and clinical applications. In: Kurzrock R, Talpaz M, editors. Molecular biology in cancer medicine. London: Martin Dunitz Ltd, 1995; pp.54-84

Online publication. Health Care Financing Administration. 1996 statistics at a glance. Available at: External link http://www.hcfa.gov/stats/stathili.htm Accessed December 2, 1996.

Proofs and reprints. The corresponding author will receive proofs via e-mail in PDF format, which should be corrected and returned within 48 hours of receipt. Proofs must be carefully checked by the authors, as it is their responsibility to see that all errors are corrected and queries from editors answered. Any paid color art will be included in the PDF proof.

Copyright. Upon acceptance of an article by the journal, the author(s) will be asked to transfer copyright of the article to the publisher. This transfer form is to be signed and returned to the publisher at the address shown on the form, which will ensure the widest possible dissemination of information under the U.S. Copyright Law.
