Guide for Authors
Submission of manuscripts
Manuscripts must be submitted online using the "Submit online to this
journal" facility at the following website: http://ees.elsevier.com/ins. Submission by other means, such as a postal submission,
must receive prior approval from the Principal Editor. Authors should provide suggestions for 3 preferred referees (N.B., referee names
should not be taken from the Editorial or Associate Editorial Board of the journal). However, we cannot guarantee that any referees suggested
will be used.
Types of contributions
Original research work
As a guideline: experimental manuscripts should
not be longer than 40 double-spaced typed pages and 8 figures + tables; for theoretical manuscripts a maximum of 45 pages and 10 figures
+ tables is suggested.
All manuscripts should be concisely written, stressing the motivation for, and the novel aspects of, the work.
Contributions should contain an Abstract (of up to 200 words) and a Conclusions section, which particularly in the case of theoretical
papers translates the results into terms readily accessible to most readers.
Original material
Contributions are accepted
on the understanding that the authors have obtained the necessary authority for publication. Submission of a manuscript must be accompanied
by a statement that the manuscript is original and unpublished and is not being considered for publication elsewhere. The statement must
indicate that all authors have read and agreed to the submission.
Upon acceptance of an article, authors will be asked to transfer
copyright (for more information on copyright see http://www.elsevier.com/copyright). This transfer will ensure the widest
possible dissemination of information. A letter will be sent to the corresponding author confirming receipt of the manuscript. A form
facilitating transfer of copyright will be provided.
If excerpts from other copyrighted works are included, the author(s) must obtain
written permission from the copyright owners and credit the source(s) in the article. Elsevier has preprinted forms for use by Authors
in these cases: contact Elsevier's Rights Department, Oxford, UK: phone (+44) 1865 843830, fax (+44) 1865 853333, e-mail permissions@elsevier.com.
Requests may also be completed on-line via the Elsevier homepage (http://www.elsevier.com/locate/permissions).
Preparation
of manuscript
All manuscripts should be written in good English. If language editing is required, authors are strongly advised
to consult a native speaker and/or visit the following website: http://www.elsevier.com/languagepolishing for details on
language editing services. More information on the electronic text can be found in the section entitled "Electronic text of manuscripts"
below.
Structure. Please adhere to the following order of presentation: Title, Author(s), Affiliation(s), Abstract, Keywords,
Main text, Acknowledgements, Appendices, References, Figure captions, Tables. For regular articles a maximum of four levels of sections
and subsections is allowed.
Keywords: Please supply 5 to 10 keywords.
Corresponding author. The name, complete
postal address, telephone and fax numbers and the e-mail address of the corresponding author should be given on the first page of the
manuscript. If possible, also provide details on other authors, especially if the corresponding author is planning to be away for a period
when the manuscript is under review or in production at the Publisher.
References. References should only be given to published
material; references are not allowed to be footnotes and references to not readily accessible reports and personal communications should
be avoided.
References on the reference list must be ordered alphabetically. In the text, refer to them using square brackets, for
example: "... and Chang and Weaver [1] show ...," etc. The style of references:
(a) journal papers: L.A. Zadeh, Toward a generalized
theory of uncertainty (GTU)- an outline, Information Sciences 172 (2005) 1-40. (b) books: W. Pedrycz, F. Gomide, Introduction to
Fuzzy Sets, MIT Press, Cambridge, MA, 1998. (c) conference proceedings: D. Poole, What the lottery paradox tells us about default
reasoning, In: H.J. Levesque, R.J. Brachman, R. Reiter (Eds.), Proc. 1st Int. Conf. Principles of Knowledge Representation
and Reasoning, KR'89, Morgan Kaufmann, Sn Mateo, CA, 1989, pp. 333-340.
Note: In the case of multiple authorship all authors should
be listed in the references provided they number less than ten. Only in the case of more than 10 authors is "first author et al." acceptable.
Preparation of electronic illustrations
Submitting your artwork in a suitable electronic format helps us to produce your
work to the best possible standards, ensuring accuracy, clarity and a high level of detail.
General points
Make
sure you use uniform lettering and sizing of your original artwork.
Save text in illustrations as "graphics" or enclose the
font.
Only use the following fonts in your illustrations: Arial, Courier, Helvetica, Times, Symbol.
Number the illustrations
according to their sequence in the text.
Use a logical naming convention for your artwork files, and supply a separate listing
of the files and the software used.
Provide captions to illustrations separately.
Produce images near to the desired
size of the printed version.
A detailed guide on electronic artwork is available on our website: http://www.elsevier.com/artworkinstructionsYou are urged to visit this site; only some excerpts from the detailed information are given here.
Formats
Regardless
of the application used, when your electronic artwork is finalised, please "save as" or convert the images to one of the following formats
(Note the resolution requirements for line drawings, halftones, and line/halftone combinations given below.):
EPS: Vector
drawings. Embed the font or save the text as "graphics".
TIFF: Colour or greyscale photographs (halftones): always use a minimum
of 300 dpi.
TIFF: Bitmapped line drawings: use a minimum of 1000 dpi.
TIFF: Combinations bitmapped line/half-tone
(colour or greyscale): a minimum of 500 dpi is required.
DOC, XLS or PPT: If your electronic artwork is created in any of these
Microsoft Office applications please supply "as is".
Please do not:
Supply embedded graphics in your
word processor (spreadsheet, presentation) document;
Supply files that are optimised for screen use (like GIF, BMP, PICT, WPG);
the resolution is too low;
Supply files that are too low in resolution;
Submit graphics that are disproportionately
large for the content.
Colour illustrations. If, together with your accepted manuscript, you submit usable colour
figures then Elsevier will ensure, at no additional charge, that these figures will appear in colour on the web (e.g., ScienceDirect
and other sites) regardless of whether or not these illustrations are reproduced in colour in the printed version. For colour reproduction
in print, you will receive information regarding the costs from Elsevier after receipt of your accepted manuscript.
Please note:
Because of technical complications which can arise by converting colour figures to grey scale (for the printed version should you not
opt for colour in print) please submit in addition usable black and white versions corresponding to all the colour illustrations.
Electronic text of manuscripts: Authors must submit their manuscript online as a LaTeX, Microsoft®, (MS) Word®, WordPerfect®,
PostScript document via the online submission system.
Instructions on the use of this system are also available on this website.
The system generates an Adobe Acrobat® PDF version of the manuscript, which is used for the reviewing process. It
is crucial that all illustrations are provided as separate files and that all artwork is numbered according to its sequence in the text.
Figures, schemes and plates should have captions and these are provided on a separate sheet along with the manuscript, in addition all
figures are referred to in the text. Authors, Reviewers and Editors send and receive all correspondence by e-mail and no paper correspondence
is necessary. Should you have difficulty in the submission web process, please contact author support at authorsupport@elsevier.com.
N.B.: electronic manuscripts submitted for the review process may need to be edited after acceptance to follow journal standards.
For this an "editable" file format is necessary. See the requirements above for electronic file formats for further information.
Please note that no deviations from the version accepted by the editor of the journal are permissible without the prior and explicit
approval by the editor.
After acceptance
Notification. The corresponding author will be notified by the editor of the
acceptance of the manuscript and urged to supply an editable electronic version of the accepted text.
Copyright transfer.
In the course of the production process you will be asked to transfer copyright of the manuscript to the publisher. This transfer will
ensure the widest possible dissemination of information.
Page proofs. Page proofs are made and sent out to authors, in order
to check that no undetected errors have arisen in the typesetting (or file conversion) process. No changes in, or additions to, the edited
manuscript will be accepted.
Author benefits No page charges. Publishing in Information Sciences is free.
The
corresponding author, at no cost, will be provided with a PDF file of the article via e-mail or, alternatively, 25 free paper offprints.
The PDF file is a watermarked version of the published article and includes a cover sheet with the journal cover image and a disclaimer
outlining the terms and conditions of use.
Authors can also keep a track on the progress of their accepted manuscript, and set up
e-mail alerts informing them of changes to their manuscript's status, by using the "Track a Paper" feature on the journal's web site
(http://www.elsevier.com/locate/ins).
